5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best post-human Earth novels EVER!, 16 Sep 2014

I've been reading science fiction for almost 40 years now and though I first read this first only 7 years ago, it's one that still comes fondly to mind often.
It is not a character driven novel, which I generally look for so it's all the more impressive how this hauntingly beautiful novel has remained with me.this is also why the first part of the book is perhaps not so captivating.
It is the gentle elegiac latter part of the novel which is its triumph. This is a haunting tale of the last people where the earth is reasserting itself. The age of man is over but it is a beautiful depiction of Nature flourishing, more wistful than sad.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Quality Space Opera, 5 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The 3 books of this trilogy are among the most entertaining i have read in the last decade.I,m a space Opera fan for over 30 years now and after so many disappointments in recent years where the promise of the opening book of a series quickly peters out ( eg. The seeds of Earth trilogy),
all 3 of these novels have been unputdownable. Its not "hard sci-fi" but then it never claims to be. All 3 have great storylines, great characterization but most of all is the pace of the action.
It lulls below the level of breakneck perhaps twice throughout the 3 books. Rarely mind expanding stuff (though the end of the first book is unexpectedly novel) they're hugely entertaining.
Hope we haven't seen the last of Holden and his crew

Nice print and colour as per picture but very poor material. Gossamer thin- especially as it was by no means cheap-very disappointing quality

4.0 out of 5 stars the best piece of kit i've ever bought, almost!, 19 Dec 2011
Fabulous design, amazing value, great functionality- all in all, the best accessory for a smartphone that's mostly used as an mp3 player! However after 6 months of great service i've sadly discovered a large flaw- ie, its quite fragile.perhaps its wonderful spring-folding design is it's own worst enemy- I found I tended to stuff them in my front pocket. anyway the springy headband has cracked and broken in several places in recent weeks.its now beginning to act odd- don't imagine they'll last much longer- still great for 20bucks !

5.0 out of 5 stars Top drawer Space opera, 8 Jun 2009
this is a classy well written space opera; pacey, lots of novel ideas, the only complaint being that it ends without a full resolution- in other words it'll lead straight into the next installment- which i'm looking forward to already!

2.0 out of 5 stars Do'nt believe the HYPE!, 22 Jun 2004
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a longtime space-opera enthusiast, i bought this book on the strength of the reviews below.Sadly it turned out to be a slightly below par, somewhat dull affair.
Though the characters are well enough drawn, it's hard to care much about them and the pace of the novel is plodding due, I think, to switching too often from one storyline to another. Also the plot itself isn't very original and the ending predictable.
Reviewers!-just because a writer's from this side of the pond is no reason to switch off all critical faculties!
