5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful addition to any CD collection, 23 Feb 2014
Well done Fitzroy, you exceeded my high expectations!! From track one, the sublime Brenda Russell through to the last track from Kenny Wellington (who is new to me a solo artist), I loved it and you will not be disappointed if you buy it. This collection blends the familiar with some cuts that might have been missed as it passes through time from 1977 to the present. On the home front, I just love the Incognito remix, the Omar track sounds so fresh - it really should have been a massive hit and Personal Life are just wonderful. From Stateside, the selections delve deeper than just the obvious tracks from the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire, Cameo and Brass Construction, but the quality is just as high. Soul survivors indeed!!
I cannot wait for Volume 2 - don't make us wait too long

5.0 out of 5 stars The quality remains as high as ever!, 26 Jan 2014
This review is from: Luxury Soul 2014 (Audio CD)
This compilation is superb value and of consistently high quality over the cuts 35 included, making it tricky to decide on which highlights to focus on when writing a review! But I think Personal Life are awesome, so I'll start with mentioning their sublime "Distance Can Be Sweet". Wonderful from start to finish. Similarly, what a talent Tony Momrelle is!! Spotlight must rank as a career highlight to date.
The more well-known artists included, such as Gregory Porter, Bluey/Incognito, Leon Ware and Keni Burke are synonymous for quality music and deliver exactly that. And the other acts do not let the standard drop one bit. Check Tyrone Lee, Heston and Muzart and you know that Luxury Soul 2014 is a must-have for your collection!! So well done Ralph - can't wait for the next instalment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classy Modern Soul - Not To Be Missed, 28 Oct 2013
This review is from: Morning Light (Audio CD)
Please do yourself a favour a get behind this classy offering from this London-based band. It is modern soul of very high quality, with respectful nods to the past.
This is a really well crafted album. It is actually difficult to pick out the stand out cuts because there is nothing sub-standard here - there are no fillers. Really looking forward to following this band and seeing how they develop in the future. Good luck folks - you deserve to find success with this wonderful album.

And I can confirm that the live offering is also excellent having seen them at Islington Assembly Hall.

4.0 out of 5 stars More quality music from Down Under, 24 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Still Life (Audio CD)
The sticker on the CD says classic style with a modern twist and I think they hit the nail on the head with that. I first heard Kylie's vocals with the Bamboos and then loved "All In You" when Robbie Vincent played it recently. It brings to mind a little of "In My Life" by Ruby Turner, but it is simply an instant classic to these ears, so I had to buy the album.
And I have to say it does not disappoint. Nice variety of styles, but all with soul and feeling. Songs like "Still Life" and "Letterhead Life" sound a little like the superb Swing Out Sister. "Changes" is a classy uptempo number and "Howlin' For You" hits a nice reggae rhythm. And I have to say, it is always great to hear real strings and horns on an album.

I note Kylie co-wrote all but one of the tracks, so her talents do not stop at beautiful vocals! I shall look forward to following Kylie's music in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent entertainment, 12 Jan 2010
Not sure what caused the previous reviewer to be so upset with this Chris Botti recording, but I can only, politely, disagree. Beautiful music, top quality guest stars (from across the musical board), a cracking band and of course, the man really, really can play that trumpet. In short, what's not to like ? Sure live recordings never really capture the joy of being there in person (go see Chris and his band - you won't be disappointed), but this comes pretty close. For me, the highlights are the soaring tune of Cinema Paradiso - just beautiful (Bellissimo!) and the wonderful When I Fall In Love, but the best advice I can give is just to sit back, relax and let the wonderful music warm your soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Classic Soul, 4 May 2008
This review is from: Lay It Down (Audio CD)
Wow, I don't write many reviews but had to write one here as this album deserves to be a massive hit. Al has had help from the younger generation of soul artists in the form of Anthony Hamilton, Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend and even the Dap Kings horn section. Each make lovely somewhat understated contributions, but make no mistake Al Green is the star of this classic set !! The set flows smoothly through each delicious slice of southern soul. Eleven tracks and they all hit the mark with Al on top form vocally. I'm not even tempted to skip any tracks, this really is music for your soul. I hope that this gets the Grammy recognition it so richly deserves !!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great anthology, 24 Nov 2007
This review is from: Messages Anthology (Audio CD)
I can definitely recommend this as anthology as the best way to get to know this extremely talented artist. If you love great music and like lyrics that make you think then this is the album for you. I listen and reflect with sadness at times that Gil seems to be struggling so much to defeat his own drug demons, but that does not reduce the impact of the inclusions.
The album covers the period 1973 to 1980, but to my ears the quality of the music is timeless. It is jazz, it is soul, it is funk, but above all is beautiful music. The live version of "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is quite simply 12 minutes of superb music, but perhaps the real gems are the harder to later tracks like Alien (Hold On To Your Dreams) and Madison Avenue.
Much respect to the folks at Soul Brother for putting together the ultimate Gil Scott-Heron compilation. Looking forward to Volume 2!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Angie's Best Album Yet !!, 13 Nov 2007
This review is from: The Art of Love & War (Audio CD)
Angie has produced some cracking albums in the past, but this goes straight to the top of the list in my view. Stand outs for me are the sublime "Baby", the awesome "My people" with the much loved vocals of James Ingram and "Pop pop". However, I do feel guilty picking out just these because this is the real deal... all killer no filler. This set works on every level and I think is a must for an soul music fan. Just buy it and look forward to the gigs early in 2008 (as promised at the recent Jazz Cafe shows).

5.0 out of 5 stars The Standard Is Always Maintained, 27 Aug 2006
Wow, Norman and his team have done it again !! I shouldn't be surprised because volumes 1 to 5 are equally wonderful. As ever Good Times is a journey through all types of music, but whatever the genre the tracks are top drawer !! Personal favourites on GT6 are the awesome soulful house of Poor People, the 80's latin classic from Willie Colon and the sheer quality of the Tortured Soul cut. But having said that almost all of the 31 tracks are wonderful in their own right (sorry Light Flight may need a few more listens). Just buy it and enjoy, it's what your ears were invented for.

2.0 out of 5 stars Let the buyer beware, 14 April 2006
This review is from: Mastercuts Soul (Audio CD)
Let me start by saying what a huge fan I have been of Mastercuts releases over the years. It was therefore with excitement that I picked up this release. Sadly, I found it very disappointing. The release includes some dodgy live versions (EWF & Marvin are two of them) which are not listed as live versions (a pet hate of mine). No liner notes are included - maybe not to illustrate the poetic licence taken with calling it a 70's collection as some of the tracks are obviously 80's. The collection is also pretty short and could easily have been fitted on to 2 discs. Yes, it's a cheap-ish set, but beware the lack of quality - especially when compared to the truly brilliant "early" Mastercuts releases.
