4.0 out of 5 stars pleasant surprise, 1 Dec 2009
This review is from: Head First (Audio CD)
i have only recently rediscovered heep after thirty years and so have been amazed at all the line up changes and widely different styles they have adopted. This album from the eighties was a pleasant surprise - good driving american style rock with sing along choruses - not the heep i had imagined but great for the in car stereo. Fun

5.0 out of 5 stars the real deal, 1 Dec 2009
Forget the films these comic strips are based on the novels and manage in a few pages to capture the plot and characters perfectly. the stories zip along. the action is raw, the women are beautiful, the villains are devilish and Bond is exactly as you would imagine him. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars happy days, 1 Dec 2009
I remember reading bunty to my daughter as a young girl. She continued to read it herself until she was 16, such was the hold it had over her. So i bought this as a christmas present for her but couldn't resist a trip down memory lane. Fun, innocent and inventive - these are stories where there is always a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and where families and friendship matter more than anything in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars a life worth sharing, 1 Nov 2009
I was attracted by the cover as i waited for my wife in the shop at martin mere. i started to read it as she took her time choosing packs of cards. by the time i got to his amazing descriptions of gannets diving i knew i had to buy this book. Reading it has been an immense pleasure. The prose is fabulous - this is some of the best writing i have read in a long time - and the sense of the world he conveys is miraculous. The book drove me out. each time i finished a chapter i was gripped by a desire to get out into the countryside and watch the skies. but even more than that the book touched on what it means to be human and those insights into his own life added to the whole. I cannot recommend this book enough - it would be a great present to anyone who liked good writing. it certainly is a life worth sharing

5.0 out of 5 stars songs that live again, 30 Oct 2009
I recently revisited Uriah Heep live - bought when I was a young lad. At the time I thought it was the greatest album ever made. But as I grew older the album went to the back of my cupboard and only this year has it seen the light of day again. And it was still great. This rediscovery had me trawling through uriah heep history and buying up old and new stuff including wake the sleeper which really was good. So when I found celebration I was a little concerned. Would this detract from my love of the live album? Can songs that are re recorded ever be as good as the original? Well on the basis of this the answer is yes. These are great songs well played and beautifully produced. Bernie Shaw is a great vocalist and makes the songs his own. The accompanying dvd is fun and a great addition and the new songs are catchy rock numbers that capture the feel of this new heep. Here's to a healthy heep future

4.0 out of 5 stars history in microcosm, 12 Oct 2009
This review is from: The Air We Breathe (Paperback)
andrea barrett has a habit of writing books that have an historical basis but which carry a contemporary resonance. this book about tb patients in america during the first world war was full of fascinating detail. however the way in which the story was told through the day to day incidents in the lives of the patients was what i found most compelling. beautifully crafted characters combined with a sense of injustice to create a provocative piece of writing that lingered in the memory

2.0 out of 5 stars left feeling uncomfortable, 1 July 2009
Touching love story or slightly perverse look at sex. Clever idea for a book but the ideas of sex between teens and older men that punctuates the book left me feeling slightly uncomfortable. i am also really tired of relationships being centred around sex without any concept of deeper human and pschological issues. perhaps its just easiest to do things this way. my wife loved it and i did fnd the final chapter a moving evocation of love - but not a favourite

5.0 out of 5 stars challenge to change, 3 May 2008
A book for teachers, youth leaders and anyone interested in promoting community cohesion. Its well set out structure allows students to engage with the ideas of community and then get involved in significant local projects. Along with the helpful and funny cd this is an excellent resource
