Superb album. I'm not a Bowie fanatic, but appreciate that he is a British institution and he deserves credit for constantly attempting to defy categrorization. Certainly his catalogue includes some very good work and some that is less good. This album belongs in the former category. It might even be the best thing he's done.

What's really good about this album is that it's very straightforward - it doesn't aim at any particular style and you don't feel that Bowie is doing anything other than writing, playing and singing some songs. It's just very classy 21st century rock and roll.

I've only recently heard the Tin Machine albums - I think I had absorbed this general notion that Bowie had done nothing good since Scary Monsters. Well both Tin Machine albums are very good in my opinion.

Noisy, classy, hard-edged rock and roll - I guess people were disappointed because they were judging Bowie rather than the music for itself: frankly, if this music had been released by a group of unknowns, it would have received critical acclaim.

Gary Burton is really in a class of his own. He's seemingly inexhaustible in his ideas and his playing is a dream. Great band he's got together here too - smooth and groovy, very energetic, but very together.

A CD full of great ideas and wonderful playing - makes you feel good to be alive.

I've very little to say about this because 100/120 reviews at 4 and 5 pretty much says it all.

However, one thing I would like to emphasize is that Fagen's voice is getting better with age - it's getting deeper, but he's not losing his ability to hit the higher notes. I think this extra vocal range adds some layers of richness that perhaps have not been apparent in his earlier stuff (including SD stuff).

In terms of his singing, I think this is the best album he's done.

Not really much point writing a review of this album other than to say my piece about a work of genius.

It's really very difficult to say why the Beatles were so damn good, but there's not really any need because it's all on Abbey Road.

I like it better than any other Beatles album (which makes it something special). The whole album is of a breathtaking standard, but side 2 is unique in its artistry. I think it's the best 25 minutes of pop music ever produced by an English band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Genesis album, 19 Dec 2012
This review is from: Seconds Out (Audio CD)
The best Genesis album and one of the best live rock albums ever made. I saw the band on the tour after this and they were electrifying - most bands only peak for a couple of years or so - this album captures Genesis right at their peak.

I don't particularly like Phil Collins solo material, but this album shows what a great live performer he was in this period - it's easy to forget how much of Gabriel there is in the early Genesis material, but Collins makes it his own - his rendition of the Musical Box, the Cinema Show and I Know What I Like are quite superb.

What's more the closing piece Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos is electrifying and stands comparison with anything produced by Gabriel's Genesis.

I hadn't heard this album till a couple of weeks ago. It's very accomplished. The compositions and arrangements are the work of a very sophisticated musician - it's easy to forget just how able Zappa was. The band is great and the playing is extremely tight.

This is superb. For me it's the best Steely Dan album, smooth, witty, controlled and varied. No two tracks are the same, but none of them sound like anything I'd ever heard before. It's not as jazzy as Aja but in many ways is better for it. Quite pared down, it's more consistently mood-oriented than anything else by Fagen and Becker. Fantastically played, produced and arranged, every track is a masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars humanism, 17 Mar 2012
A must read by one of the most important writers of the 20th century. If you are an atheist, Levi probably provides the best, plainest and deepest expression of the moral problem of human existence with no God. The content of some of Levi's work is very distressing (like this book), but we should be eternally grateful to him for his candid, objective simple statements of issues that simpy cannot be ignored.
