5.0 out of 5 stars A modern master, 7 Jan 2013

Great to have some Knussen recorded for posterity. He has been a great servant to contemporary music, and underplays his own compositions, so this is a chance to hear some substantial contributions to modern music - and not at all "difficult" to appreciate.

The Man Who Walked Through Walls (Pushkin Collection)
by Marcel Ayme
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.40

5.0 out of 5 stars Humour with a difference, 7 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fantastic stories in all senses of the word. Ayme had a very original mind, which delights in language and novelty. A total delight which must appeal to any reader looking for something different - amazing that these works are not more famous.

5.0 out of 5 stars complex, challenging, but rewarding, 7 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well worth investigating if you don't expect the listener to get a full reward without making an effort. As a young man I found Birtwistle's music too perplexing, but I've come to realise he is one of England's greatest composers, and find much of his music immensely moving. But this is probably not where I would recommend the uncommitted to start. (Try perhaps "Night's Black Bird" on NMC or the wonderful 2CD compendium on Decca, including Secret Theatre & Endless Parade.)

A tremendous collection of the Britten Quartets, with superb performances matched by excellent recorded sound, and of course the music itself is sublime.

A bargain edition of a wonderful version of both these Spanish keyboard classics. Good sound and generous length, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars get Carter here, 7 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Two magnificent works that reveal why Elliott Carter is regarded as a top rank composer. Written in the 1990's when Carter was already in his 80's they have the vigour and excitement one associates with youth. Michael Collins yet again shows why he is considered one of the world's best clarinettists, and both the London Sinfonietta & BBC SO are outstanding ensembles for contemporary music, which in this case is lyrical and powerful, and not at all "difficult" to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars bargain collection, 7 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Now that Elliott Carter has died, it will be interesting to see how the recording companies react. I was pleased to get this low price collection of works performed to celebrate the composer's 80th birthday in 1988, with yet another superb performance by Heinz Holliger as a kind of built-in bonus. Obviously this represents only a small fraction of Carter's output, but along with Michael Collins' performance of the Clarinet concerto on DG (from the 1990's) you have a good selection to decide whether you will become a Carter fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turkish take on western classicism, 7 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The main work is a substantial violin concerto, which brings a certain Eastern exoticism to the otherwise classical sound world. It is magnificently played and recorded, and rewards repeated listening. Fazil Say is a virtuoso pianist as well as a leading Turkish composer, and the short tracks of Summertime and Mozart's Turkish rondo are really encore pieces. More substantial is the piece he wrote for the 2006 Vienna Mozart Festival "Patara Ballet". I find it growing on me, but I will more often want to hear the exciting violin concerto, and will watch out for other performances by Patricia Kopatchinskaja, the young violinist featured here.

5.0 out of 5 stars essential listening, 7 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A fine selection of Knussen's music, showing the breadth as well as depth of his compositions. He has done so much to further the work of other modern composers as a conductor, that it's nice to be able to purchase something of his own. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent music making, 7 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Another great collection of Turnage's music, which deserves more live performances, but since most of us won't get that chance to hear them, it's good that these premieres were recorded for us to enjoy at home. Marvellous soloists and a sympathetic LPO mean a chance for repeated listening and therefore deeper appreciation of these fine works. Highly recommended and at a reasonable price.
