The playing of Billy Bang ass an eerie feel to this provocative recording. One of those 'Live' albums that retains it sense of being live.

Wonderful textured music with a balance of simple repetitive phrasing and complex flurries and well constructed solos. Best described a chill out music for people with an ear for free jazz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intellegent art vs pap, 1 Nov 2008
This review is from: Here I Stand (Audio CD)
This album consists mainly of slow tracks but not all are typical ballads. Some are soulful reflections on life and relationships. The music itself is a mix of neo classical soul and modern R n B. This combination may lead to audiences responding to the familiarity of the modern beat and then eschewing the other creative material.

Basically your ability to appreciate this music depends on your ablity to appreciate talent in song writing, vocal delivery and the arrangement of strong vocals with the right accompaniment. If you can appreciate these, this album wil inspire you and will call you back time and again, even in 5 or ten years. If you like to feel a beat and you 'know what you like' - and that is modern mass produced R n B - you may well be disappointed.

My assessment is that Usher has made an album that is interesting. If you read novels, it is like a combination of good character development and superb plot. If you watch films it is like fantastic dialogue, great character development and wonderful locations. If these references to the content of other art forms bewilder you, you probably will rate this album poorly.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album for grown ups, 17 May 2008
This review is from: Afropeans (Audio CD)
This is an outstanding album by the Jazz Warriors (not Courtney Pine - who plays some sumptuous bass clarinet on this). As a bandleader Pine has put together an eclectic mix of instruments and styles that must have thrilled the audience. The requirement of the listener is to be in love with music and passion rather than with a particular instrumemnt or genre. High quality musicianship underscores this project that is all the more profound because of the subject matter. I adore albums that keep my interest. In 100 years time this will be filled under classical MOBO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well integrated, 17 May 2008
This review is from: Empirical (Audio CD)
They are obviously young and finding their own style but you can hear the tidy integration of Ornette Coleman and of Steve Coleman - different styles but cogent nontheless. If you are a fan of Kenny G (not the classy Garrett but the other one) then steer well clear of this album. It has twists and turns and is put together to hold interest conceptually, melodically and harmonically.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take your time to realise it's a classic, 4 Oct 2007
This review is from: Graduation (Audio CD)
We suffer from banging beats and one-listen hits that last a month then die. Jesus walks - a classic. How many hip hop classics like that are there? This album is packed full of genius and quality. If you are five years old, Stronger and Champion wil appeal to the simplicity in you. If you are forty, they will appeal to the distinguished in you. Each track has the mass appeal with lyrics and beats but beneath you get wisdom, a soul vibe and pure musical genius. I accept this isn't for everbody in the same way that caviar isn't neither is champers. Drink thug rap only if you like. If you like some good juice every now and then, feast my hommies.

5.0 out of 5 stars As hot as the Mobb!!!, 15 Sep 2007
This review is from: Bad Boy (Audio CD)
Lyrically tight and efficient delivery as hot as Mobb Deep, Pusha T and Malice from the Clipse. Noodles is a bubbling hip hopp track with spitting that reminds you pure emceeing from KRS, Kane, Slick Rick, Easy Mo and Rakim early days. Every track after this sounds clear and better than most stuff you'll hear nowadays. You know why u used 2 listen 2 Bad Boy in the 1st place. One their own these guys stand as giants. I have always loved G Depp and this confirms that he is one of hip hops best kept secrets.
