5.0 out of 5 stars Hadlow's debut is not too be missed!, 7 Dec 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an exceptional debut by Janice Hadlow about King George III and his dysfunctional family. Do not let the 600 pages deter you from what is a detailed and at time hilarious portrayal of George and his prudish Queen Charlotte. Their obsessive nature's stifled their seven sons who squandered money and took notorious mistresses that scandalised their appalled parents. Their six daughters were stifled and married late in life if at all. yet many were associated with rumours and scandals that hinted at their rebellious nature too! This thought provoking book is a must for any self-confessed addict of the Hanoverian dynasty such as myself! However if you are discovering this amazing dynasty for the first time you must read this exceptional book and I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

Eleanor of Castile: The Shadow Queen
Eleanor of Castile: The Shadow Queen
by Sara Cockerill
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £17.00

5.0 out of 5 stars First ever biography of Edward I's beloved Queen Eleanor of Castille, 7 Dec 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Eleanor of Castille is a queen shrouded in mystery, but as the devoted wife of England's most successful medieval king Edward I This is surely undeserved! A lover of gardening and a passionate supporter of the crusader campaigns in the holy-land, Eleanor proved herself a capable ruler in her husband's long abscenses from the kingdom. Despite her Spanish blood Eleanor remained popular with the English people until her early death in 1290. Sara Cockerill has written an illuminating and detailed first ever biography of this remarkable woman and demonstrates her remarkable political acumen and common sense that guide her husband through turbulent periods of his reign. Her undoubted influence upon Edward steered England towards a political stability it had lacked under the reigns of Edward's two predecessors, thus ensuring peace throughout Edward's England. I would heartily recommend this book for anyone interested in this period of history as its a rip-roaring read and one that is both detailed and informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new study of the First l;ady of france!, 7 Dec 2014

This review is from: Joan of Arc (Hardcover)
I have always been a fan of Joan of Arc and her incredible life story is still awe inspiring even when the layers of mist and legend are removed. Her incredible experiences reinvigorated a defeated nation into the hope of one day regaining their freedom and expelling the English from France. Unfortunately, Joan did not live to see this eventuality happen but her undoubted courage and bravery were instrumental in helping France regain her self-respect and eventually to win back her freedom! The book is detailed and thorough as readers of DR Helen castor have come to expect and she never loses sight of the fact that Joan was one of the most extraordinary women that has ever lived. Its a conclusion that I heartily agree with and I enjoyed the thread of the book and its central theme of Joan's exceptional veracity that lifted a nation from its slumber in quite desperate times. She is simply a remarkable woman who would grace any age. Read this book and you will not be disappointed!

This review is from: The Demon's Brood (Hardcover)
Fantastic book chronicling the lives of England's' powerful Plantagenent dynasty. Seward's' superb narrative focuses in turn upon each monarch high-lighting each monarch's strengths and weaknesses. Great rip-roaring history conducted at a frenetic pace that will leave you breathless with anticipation. I certainly recommend this book for a comprehensive and humorous read! Book arrived early and extremely well packaged. Book brand-spanking new and Amazon again score a well deserved five star rating.

Alexander III: King of Scots
Alexander III: King of Scots
by Marion Campbell
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding biography of king Alexander III, 6 Oct 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
King Alexander III has long been one of my favourite kings of Scotland. And so I eagerly purchased Marion Campbell's biography of this much maligned monarch. Cheifly remembered for his mysterious death and outliving all of his children, we forget that Alexander had tremendous success on the battlefield defeating the Norwegians at the battle of Largs and winning important territory for the Scottish nation as we know it today. A superb administrator and a truly patriotic king intent on bringing justice to all of his people. His tragic demise was a tragedy Scotland never really recovered from. Marion Campbell's book is a detailed and thorough examination of Alexander III'S reign and one I would truly recommend as an outstanding read. Its sure to be the definitive work of the king for decades to come!
