A vision of a post epidemic world, that is chaotic, savage and unsettling. Kay has fully envisaged, in sometimes gruesome detail, a dog eat dog society, seen through the world weary eyes of Billie, an unlikely, 6 foot, androgynous heroine. Billie is tough and intelligent, a match for the gangs and lunatics roaming this strange land, but in a peculiar way we feel safe in her company.

Kay's prose is louche and juicily descriptive. It's a book that stays with you in an absorbing but not entirely comfortable way.

When I read the reviews for this novel I thought it sounded irritatingly cute but then two of my friends recommended it, for them it was life changing and profound, so I downloaded it on my kindle.
Turns out I was right. The style is of an innocent regarding the world with a refreshing lack of guile but I'm afraid I found the hundred year old man worryingly conscience free. He steals the suitcase of a stranger, which we are apparently ok with because the owner of the suitcase is scruffy, long haired and obviously up to no good. When the suitcase owner comes after him he knocks him out, then puts him in a freezer, turns the freezer on when the lad comes round and starts battering down the door, then gets drunk and forgets to turn the freezer off. The lad dies, but this is ok because he is apparently involved in criminal activity. Hmm...
The hundred year old man then sets off on his madcap adventure with a cast of quirky - and similarly cardboard cutout - characters pursued by the police and the criminal gang....That's where I stopped reading...Yes I gave up.
So I guess I just didn't get it. My two friends and I suppose thousands of other people since it's a bestseller, loved this book, so what do i know? You might love it.

Summer of Blood is an academic history book but written in a highly readable narrative style, gives a great insight into the mood of the age with some real revelations about the way people of the time thought. The parallels between the 14th century and modern times are particuarly surprising and revealing.

This book pulls together strands of knowledge about this disease into a comprehensible whole. It creates a vital resource for those suffering or even those who suspect they are suffering from chronic Lyme disease. Ultimately it offers hope and a future for sufferers by mapping out a treatment plan using both conventional and alternative treatments which if followed will enable sufferers to live their lives with quality or could in some cases even eliminate the disease from their lives. Detailed, precise, scientific and yet highly readable and accessible
