Most fans of this series know what it is all about. It is brilliant British humour of the old risqué style. All the characters are very well-played by true pros, but a special mention has to go to John Inman.

My German girlfriend had never seen any of these episodes before but now she is hooked and can not get enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful, practical and elegant., 14 Feb 2010

I used to own one of these years ago. Since moving abroad I have not owned one, but then I had the idea of ordering over Amazon. Delivery was quick and efficient and the product is perfect. My (German) girlfriend had never eaten poached eggs. Now she prefers them to any other sort.

If you grease the containers with a little butter or margarine and follow the instructions on timing, your perfect poached eggs slide out onto your plate or toast and cleaning up is a piece of cake.

Would not be without this product ever again.

Victor Borge is a genius, an accomplished musician with a wicked sense of humour. It is a pity that his stuff is so hard to find on DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Writer's Bible, 7 Oct 2009

I bought this to replace an older version that is now out of date (but still useful). It is a weightly tome but worth its weight in folding money.

I bought this because it is a piece of rock history. The best track without a doubt is Chantilly Lace. The rest are good but not outstanding but it filled a hole in my collection. The Big Bopper died in the same plane crash as Buddy Holly and Richie Valens and for this alone it is worthwhile to remember him.

We all know the TV series. This is a film-length version of the series with all the known characters and some very funny scenes. It is well worth the money. Gentle British humour that also appeals to my (German) girlfriend. Love it.

In my opinion BC has never been better than in this book. It is typically his style but goes a little more deeply into thoughts and feelings, for example Nick Hook's religious beliefs and his conviction that the 2 saints Crispin and Crispinian talk to him (in his head). As ever with BC the battle scenes are bloody and magnificent and you are there on the battlefield with the main characters. Masterly.

Nigel Mansell: My Autobiography

4.0 out of 5 stars Nigel as we know him and love him., 25 Jun 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am a fan and have lots of respect for Nigel Mansell. Considering he came from Birmingham "the boy done good" (I also come from Birmingham which is another reason I liked the book). Great stories of teams, managers, drivers and cars and good explanations of what drives him and how he drives. His love and respect for his wife also comes across strongly. NM is tough and a fighter and a big softie on the inside. There is a bit of everything here to delight any motorsport fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars The next McNab, 5 Jun 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was surprised at how literate Simon Low is. He can write, which is why I think he could be the next Andy McNab (of whom I am a great fan). What the book is about has already been covered by others so let me just say I got the impression that the author is being honest and telling it like it is. I especially enjoyed the sections about his experiences in the Foreign Legion, but found the whole book engrossing and a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is literature., 4 Jun 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are books and then there is literature and this book is definitely in that category. It is so beautifully written and meticulously researched, it is a work of art. Some reviewers have complained that it does not have a happy ending, but it is not "schmalzy" and you accept the ending for what it is. Life often does not have a nice, clean happy ending.

The atmosphere and ambience of Berlin before, during and after the First World War is brilliantly captured, as are the rise of Nazism and the glory days of German cinema. You live through it with Lilly. Some of the writing is so good you have to stop and read it again - it is literally breathtaking. Images will stay with you long after you have finished the book. There are echoes of Dickens and other great writers but this is Ms Colin's own work in her own words and it is a masterpiece. I can not recommend it highly enough. If you enjoy good writing, buy it, borrow it or steal it. You will love it.
