5.0 out of 5 stars Irish WW II RAF Heroes, 23 July 2013
A remarkable product of 22 years of work by John C Hewitt, telling, in 509 pages, the stories of 143 men from across the Island of Ireland who volunteered for the RAF in WW II, with ranks from Leading Aircraftsman and Sgt to AVM and Air Marshal, and from both Southern Irish Counties, like Roscommon, Donegal, Louth, Offaly, Limerick, or Dublin, as well as so many from Ulster.

Hewitt mentions that 1,352 lost their lives - that would suggest, given the rate of loss suffered in the RAF, that maybe 20,000 volunteered from the whole Island in WW II, which would also tally with official published postwar figures. And, according to the work of Richard Doherty and others, another 100,000 were in the British Army, most from the South.

An inspiring story, and a worthy remembrance of those to whom we all can be profoundly grateful. I hope he publishes his planned Vol II.

3.0 out of 5 stars Glaring error, 13 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Mad Dog (Paperback)
Why did the list of characters refer to a *ROBBIE* Flanagan as RUC Chief Constable ? His name was Ronnie. This glaring error inevitably raises the basic question - who really wrote this book ? If only a typo,as B and N sit beside one another on a keyboard, then it at least suggest that no one from, or with a knowledge of, Ulster could have carefully checked the text before it was printed.
