4.0 out of 5 stars The world of sailing and high fashion in Tarrant, Hampshire., 13 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was a series that we started watching when it was originally broadcast but for various reasons lost interest after the second or third series.
However, it must be admitted that we are now really enjoying watching this collection of discs which provides a mixture of human interest and amusement. The cast clearly enjoyed making the series and the script and acting is very professionally managed. It is fascinating to see how the main characters can become experts at anything that they choose to do , the fashions of the time with the huge shoulders and the vast amount of alcohol that was consumed seemingly at any time during the day.
Some of the characters remain memorable. Tom and Jan of course with Jack and his foreman Bill, Avril and Polly and Charles and Gerald. Ken Masters is particularly unforgettable with his sharp practises and rolled up jacket sleeves. Finally, Dulcie Grey and Michael Denison are simply themselves!
This long series is good value for money and in our view absolutely ideal for anyone wanting to see how a collection of individuals steer their courses through the world of sailing and fashion . Just sit back and let it all wash over you.

This is an excellent book which follows the career of a musical icon.
Using a wide bibliography and other sources including several with the subject himself, Mike Evans charts both the ups and downs of a life that at times is nothing short of inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inimitable., 18 Mar 2013

At this time Ray Charles was at his very best. Moving into territory that appeared unlikely, he confounded his critics with two albums of some quality. It introduced him to a range of new fans who went on to appreciate his ability to slide between a range of musical genres without destroying his artistic integrity.

With his use of Big Band and strings, this collection has some wonderful tracks; not least " Take these Chains" and " Your Cheating Heart".

Excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcomed blast from the past, 18 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It has been a great pleasure renewing our acquaintance with a situation comedy series that, to some extent, has been overshadowed by others such as " THe Good Life"

Richard Briers is simply superb as the insecure control freak. Supported by an outstanding cast, I was not surprised to read that Briers preferred this series to the others that he starred in.

Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars One to treasure., 17 Jun 2011
The ten episodes of Mapp and Lucia filmed in 1985/6 are ,to quote the Padre, "succulent in the extreme". E. F. Benson's famous characters are brilliantly brought to life by faultless casting, superb locations and inspired dramatisation and direction by Gerald Savory and Donald McWhinnie.
The series is a period piece. Elegant costumes and manners of a time past, though echoes still remain in places today, are vividly captured by all concerned.Mapp and Lucia is, in my view, simply television at its very best.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas concert to cherish., 19 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is in many ways such a bitter sweet celebration of Christmas music. The marvellous Ray Charles is joined by a wonderfuly exhuberant and joyful choir who clearly enjoyed performing with such a celebrated musician. It was, however, to be his last concert.Despite some fraility Charles plays some beautiful music. The empathy with The Voices of Jubilation and the supporting musicians is a joy to behold. The audience loved it, so did I and I hope, so will you.

4.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring Queen., 3 Oct 2010
Fire Over England is an excellent film which embraces the talents of a superb cast and A. E. W. Mason who wrote the script. It is a film of some age now, and there are production limitations, the battle scenes for example, but this should not detract from the pleasures of a literate script with fine performances from an all star cast. Flora Robson makes a most convincing Elizabeth and Leslie Banks, Raymond Massey,Vivien Leigh, Tamara Desni and Laurence Olivier give spirited performances. There are, in addition, reminders of actors who were to became stars in their own right. Both James Mason and Robert Newton feature, Newton in particular is impressive, whilst the experienced Morton Selten as Burleigh is a delight.
The film notes draw attention to this 1937 production as one to celebrate the royal coronation year and also to act as a rallying cry against the forces of evil gathering in Nazi Germany. These were worthy objectives played out in stirring fashion. The Radio Times Film Guide has it about right, Fire Over England is "Great Fun"
If you love vintage black and white films, buy it! I certainly wasn't disappointed.

This review is from: Wages Of Fear [DVD] [1955] (DVD)
Wages of Fear is one of those atmospheric films that the French cinema made so well in the 1950's. It is, as a fellow reviewer has said, a little drawn out particularly in the early stages, but this should not detract from what is a first class adventure film.Yves Montand, Charles Vanel and Peter van Eyck are outstanding as the tension builds towards a thrilling climax. The supporting cast in the early scenes, along with the hot, dusty almost despairing location brilliantly set the scene for what is to follow.

This is not, in my view, one of the great classic films of the French cinema but that is not to say that it is not a worthy one. Well worth watching.
