5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant introduction to Pynchon, 15 Jun 2014

This review is from: Against the Day (Hardcover)
Had never read Pynchon before hearing a chance reference to the brilliance of his prose and boy did this live up to it. Some reviews compare it unfavourably with his older stuff, which I haven't read. But this vast sprawling wildly surreal epic washed over me like a tidal wave. It's not remotely like Ulysses - but in a similar way the enjoyment of swimming through its language is as much about the travelling as the destination. The tone is resonantly anti capitalist, and ranges from gripping suspense through erudite humour to the lyrically evocative and the deviantly erotic. And yet the going isn't as heavy as that all sounds. Though Pynchon is spitting feathers wherever he depicts the brutal exploitation of the have-nots by the haves, much of the time he is giving free rein to a life-affirming & exuberant sense of fun.

NB: I bought and enjoyed this on audiobook first and listened to it over six weeks or so - the prose is so dense and resonant that it bears repeated listening. Would warmly recommend it as a way into this novel - Dick Hill's narration is masterful. On the second time through it was clear that I was still missing so much that I bought the printed book as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars don't buy this, 8 Mar 2014
This review is from: Motorway (Audio CD)
this was the soundtrack of a Central TV live performance in 1990 at the end of a brief ill-advisedyear-long reformation of TRB without Dolphin Taylor. The recordings of War Baby and Atmospherics were so poor we had to substitute versions by different band lineups to make the record even listenable. This was supposed to be TRB release called The Winter Of 89 with proper artwork and everything to be released for a tiny advance in one small EU country. The label owner then repackaged it under my own name, titled it with the one song everybody had heard of, and released it Europe-wide, including the UK. We never received. penny in royalties. Please don't buy this. Tom Robinson

5.0 out of 5 stars thanks for kind reviews..., 8 Mar 2014
Appreciate the nice things others have said about the music. But be aware that if you pay this ridiculously inflated price for a cd not a penny of it will go to the artist. You can buy a digital version of this album in lossless quality ( ie way better than iTunes or amazon mp3) direct from my own Bandcamp page: tomrobinson dot bandcamp dot com. Hope this is some help.

Maps are endlessly fascinating and Simon Garfield writes in a pacy entertaining style that draws you in. Full of facts and foibles about which I knew nothing before. A great read.

Don't even dream of replacing these components separately, which involves heat guns and all kinds of fiddling disassenbly. I had shattered glass and broken display on my old iPhone screen and for twenty quid this effectively gave me a new phone. Taking off the old assembly is slighty fiddly, but just requires care and patience. I'm no kind of tech expert so if I can do it you probably can too. There are several online tutorials that show you how to do it. The hardest part of putting the new assembly in is getting the farthest connection ribbon into place and clamped down first. That took about half an hour of hair tearing and looking up online advice from others. A pair of very fine tweezers would probably have helped. But it all fitted together eventually and - bingo - a new working phone for just over £20.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit light, but does what it says on the packet, 2 May 2013

Bought this to replace an older near-identical Logitech mouse which wore out after long service. This is identical in shape and function and works perfectly, but is built to a budget. Subjectively it doesn't feel quite as robust as the old one, and I preferred the heavier feel of the denser plastic of the old one. But it definitely does the job

well constructed whodunit put together with style & skill. it ain't Raymond chandler but it certainly kept me entertained on a long train journey ( to Venice!) and by the last couple of chapters was unputdownable.

1.0 out of 5 stars False economy - don't buy, 4 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this, fully knowing it was at my own risk: I already knew from the reviews that it had worked fine for some people, and been a disaster for others. For me it turned out to be one of the disasters.

I have a late 2006 White MacBook Core 2.0 Duo, and this battery simply didnt fit into the battery compartment. The back of it LOOKED exactly the same size as the back of the original Apple battery, the top plastic bit was too big to fit flush. Since it was only an £18 battery, I shaved a bit off the plastic surround and it then finally fitted snugly into the compartment. TOO snugly, as it turned out.

The trouble was, the MacBook couldn't "see" the battery and reported that there was no battery attached, so I tried to take it back out to check the terminals. But it was then impossible to get the bettery back OUT of the compartment - the spring-loaded release catch on the battery didn't make it spring back out. I've now ended up scratching the polycarbonate case of the Macbook, trying vainly with screwdrivers to persuade the battery to come out. To no avail. It's actually broken the "coin screw" catch for the battery release

It'll now have to go to a specialist workkshop just to get the battery back out - and I'll STILL have to buy another replacement. It wopuld have been cheper to buy an Apple branded replacement battery in the first place.

I knew it was taking a chance to buy this and I've suffered the consequences. My advice: don't risk it. It might (depending on the model of Macbook you have) work just fine for you, as it did for some reviewers. But there's also a chance it might turn out to be a costly disaster.

JVC HA-FX35-B Marshmallow Comfortable Fit Earphones - Black
JVC HA-FX35-B Marshmallow Comfortable Fit Earphones - Black

1.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable fit - NOT!!!, 23 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although they're both JVC "Marshmallow" in-ear headphones, do NOT confuse these with the earlier JVC HA-FX34 model. I lost my old ones and bought these by mistake. Remember "new" coke? Remember the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Well JVC have gone and "fixed" their classic budget headphones, good and proper.

The HA-FX34 was a brilliant cheap alternative to Apple's iPod/iPhone headphones and perfect for commuting. A snug fit in the ear so they didn't constantly fall out, genuinely comfortable, and (get this) both earpieces were an identical, regular shape. So you didn't have to fiddle about getting the L and R in the correct ear - you could fumble for them on a crowded train and slide them straight into each ear with no trouble.

These bad boys are an irregular shape and won't even fit unless you get L and R in your left and right ear, and even then you have to insert them at the correct angle and make constant adjustments if the cable gets tugged. Sound quality is (subjectively) the same, comfort and cable quality are (subjectively) worse.

The HA-FX34 model still on sale and I'd strongly recommend it as the perfect commuter earphone. But on the experience of a couple of tube journeys, these ones were just horrible to use
