Does the job., 2 Jan 2010
I bought Acronis True Image a few months ago as a backup mechanism for my laptop rather than to
install images on many computers. To this end I haven't been able to provide a review on the basis
that I'm not prepared to trash my machine to see if the backup works.
Recently after my subscription to Norton Internet Security lapsed my machine became infected and it trashed a heap
of dll files that left Windows in a bit of a mess, though still running very slowly. Luckily I had taken a recent full
sector-by-sector backup of my disc. I was able to get True-Image running and kicked off a disc recovery from an external
hard drive. It was slow. Very slow. For about fifteen hours, all I could see that indicated that anything was happening
was the flashing of the HD lights. Finally my machine came back to life with a message to reboot. Another two hours
passed while partitions were re-created. Finally, a clean reboot. The relief was massive.
Buying this is a bit like breakdown recovery. For years you don't breakdown and wonder if it's worth the money. Then one
day it's cold and wet and you breakdown in the middle of nowhere and thank God you have the insurance. The money I spent
on this product saved me a weekend of rebuilding my machine.
Other points about the product:
-it's a doddle to install, I didn't experience any problems with the product key
that other reviewers have experienced.
-it provides various other utilities that some people may find useful
such as secure file deletions using different algorithms for destroying
the data on the disc. There's a system clean-up utility that claims to remove
computer usage history. It's not 100% effective in this regard.. Yes it will clean
up your recently viewed documents and recycle bin etc. but it doesn't clean up your
viewing history in Windows Media Player or your internet viewing history. If that's
what you want you might be better with "Delete History for Free".
I feel that the extra utilities offered by this product are a bonus so
if other people don't find them useful then fair enough. My five star
rating is for a product that does the job I bought it for superbly. I'm a believer
in a product knowing what its job is and doing it well, and this product does just
For complete peace of mind, buy a copy of this and Norton Internet Security.
