5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic and Funny, 21 July 2014

Having gone through Royal Marine recruit training a few years back, this book brought back a lot of memories - both funny and painful. Aside from the weapons and equipment, very little has changed since 1986/87; even the names of the exercises are mostly the same.

This is great read for those who aim to the Corps, and an entertaining read for those who want a basic insight into military training.

I feel that instead of taking a more neutral approach, he sides with the Germans at the expense of the BEF; I had to remind myself that this was an American who wrote this book, not a German. But this book does make you think.

The sources used are brilliant, and this gives a great insight into the "other side" of the battles - yet his implications that the BEF were amateur and borderline unprofessional, got tiring pretty quickly.

A great book, full off shenanigans from the 70s and 80s with Queen. Some great photos too - a very good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Read, 7 Jan 2014

A very interesting read; I think there should be less about the Dutch side of things (not to be ignored completely though) seeing as it's about 3/506.

However, it's very well written and researched; a pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, 13 April 2013
Having been born near Mons, I have always been disappointed by the lack of material on the Battle of Mons. While there are some fantastic narratives, there are not really any 'then and now' books. This book is great; eye-witness accounts, old map (corresponding to new maps), unit sketches... It's all there to provide a good insight into what the fight was like. I can now pin-point exact locations of skirmishes and unit positions.

This book would be even better to read alongside unit diaries. Also, I suggest Walter Bloem's Advance to Mons - a good book, from a German prospective.
