Although it seems impossible to believe this is based on a real life incident. There really were a group of nudist, sun worshiping, banana and coconut eating expatriates believing they would attain eternal life. Oh and did I mention the narcotic imbued coconut milk.............

Adrian McKinty is not an author I have come across before and you get the sense he really enjoyed writing this which is possibly why it is such a good read.

Am a great crime novel aficionado and like to look out for books that are a little different and this is, partly because of the location, the period in time and the fact it is not a conventional novel in terms of the solving of the crime. He does heat and people so well there were times when I was reminded of Somerset Maugham.

The characters are eccentric and both appealing and appalling. I spent some time Googling to see who was real. Bessie Pullen- Burry definitely deserves a series/biography of her own.

All in all a highly recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 25 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
It is pretty incredible that you can get a steam iron where you do not have to adjust the heat setting. The fact it is so counter intuitive from all the ironing you have ever done before means I tend to lay on the steam which is satisfying on many levels.

Took a big mixed basket ranging from a couple of linen pillowcases, a woolen jumper, various fabric mixture shirts and gaily ironed away.

It really does work. Nothing burned, creases came out. Ironing became rather zen like.

It really seems to float over fabrics in a rather surreal way.

It is a great deal lighter than my other steam iron.

In fact I found myself musing about how useful it would be to have four arms so I could fold and iron simultaneously .......... Sad but true.

On the less good but not necessarily bad side:

- it is HUGE. But what else would you expect with an iron with such a large water chamber. You may need a new ironing board.
- you cannot stand the iron on its heel - the magic 'heat flow technology' means you leave it face down on the ironing cover. Scary at first, but the ironing board cover was happy. I kept putting it back on the base though. It could change your ironing habits though which means if you ever go back to an iron with a heel you might acquire some interesting burn marks.

If I hadn't tried it I am not sure I would have spent so much money on it. Having tried it I would.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good read, 24 Mar. 2015

It is so hard to write a very funny book, and, at times this is very very funny and very, very dark.

For me I found the first 50 pages or so pretty hard going but after that things improved. This is pretty long and could have benefited from some cutting to keep it tauter.

Had just read The Commitments before this and like that novel there is a great deal of dialogue in both of them

Arlo, the haphazard criminal lead is an absolute delight a sort of Walter Mitty and fantasist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spell binding (very bad pun there), 24 Mar. 2015

Completely captivating and totally immersive.

A fantastic alternative world loosely based around the best kinds of fairy tales. Then add emotion and people who behave in a recognisable way and you have a very enjoyable reading experience on your hands.

Dramatic set piece battles, magicians, kings and queens. In fact once I started reading - it was very difficult to stop until I got to the end.

That all makes it sound very child like and possibly tacky. It is not.

If you are a great fan of the Tremeraire books you should know there are no dragons in this book. It is the wizard who is known as Dragon and he is as human as a wizard can be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not sure it is worth the money!, 18 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I do accept that I am very poor at fitting screen savers and thought that by paying more it might be easier.

Wrong.

I also thought it was supposed to be some sort of glass so assumed it would be thicker.

I followed the instructions, lovely clean screen etc and then found it so difficult to position.

Managed in the end. Am a bit worried how secure it is though as the corners look as if they will lift.

Very thin once on.

So, out of the box, two a sturdy looking unit with loads of heads that are rather scary looking if you are a novice like me. I kept the end of the box so that I could be reminded what all the different heads did.

When I did my legs I expected it to hurt a lot. It did not. I found the second speed was the more effective one and had to go over areas several times to get rid of the hairs.

Afterwards, for a couple of hours was like having pins and needles. By the morning the only thing noticeable was wonderfully hairless legs.

You do get quite a lot of hairs floating around the place as there is no soap to hold the hairs so the shower, the bath or even a dry bath are a good place. You can use this wet or dry.

There is a light as well for getting an even better view.

The under arm epilator process is considerably more painful but effective. Apparently the more you epilate the less painful it becomes - why I know not but it says that on the box.

Really love the exfoliating brush attachment as well - fantastic for the feet with summer coming on.

So all in all a fantastic product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - shame it does not come with an exfoliator though, 9 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Okay as a complete novice (longtime Veet user as no stubble) I was somewhat in trepidation as to how much this was going to hurt. It did not!

So, out of the box, two sturdy looking units. The bigger razor one with the many attachments seems pretty solid and the heads all interchange for different tasks. I kept the end of the box so that I could be reminded what all the different heads dead.

It even came charged after a fashion so arms were immediately bared and buzzing began. This immediate and public sampling involved two women and a man.

All of us expected it to hurt a lot. It did not. There was an immediate request for back epilation (be re-assured dear reader it was the man).

Later in the privacy of the bathroom I can confirm that whilst the process on the legs was slightly more painful it was easily manageable.

The pen style facial hair epilator is considerably more painful but effective. Interestingly it does not charge on the stand and takes a standard battery. It does come with one though.

Apparently the more you epilate the less painful it becomes - why I know not but it says that on the box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the summer or every day, 27 Feb. 2015
Perfume is one of those things you react to on a very emotional level. I am a great fan of clean, fresh and zingy fragrances so these are absolutely up my street. I also like Miller Harris as a perfumier as they are really clever at taking traditional things and then adding some really clever contemporary twists.

On Amazon these are sitting in Men's fragrances but could equally well sit in the women's section. Definitely unisex.

So in a really nicely packaged box you get three different citrus blends - the fact that one of them is described as Iris should not mislead you as it is quite orangey and herbal at first.

Be aware these bottles are quite small - only 15 ml each. But then again a great size to get a really good impression of how they work for you and or your other half.

Perfume reacts differently on everyone and on me these are quite subtle and not the sort of perfumes that leave a major impression behind you when you leave the room. More like the Colgate ring of confidence or that Reddy brek glow

I think they are a daytime or summer perfume.

Terre d'Iris: There is a lot of orange in this when you first smell it and then it becomes much more floral with some rose and iris in there. The die down is quite rich. If you like Aqua di Parma you will love this. Sounds as if it should be sweet but it isn't.

Le Petit Grain: Opens up very orange/lemon and then becomes very herbal - that sounds really medicinal but it is not. This is a really lovely light very natural fragrance.

Citron: This I reckon is the most masculine. Very lemony and with a touch of mint. Then you get a sort of highlight cardom like smell. Very nice and natural.

4.0 out of 5 stars The replacement blades are a little on the high side, 27 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
As a female I have noted with interest the number of women who rave about this. As yet have not tried to steal this so am writing this review based on the male in the household.

The handle is really good to grip with slippy hands because of the rubber grips.

The shave is AMAZING. Apparently it glides extra smoothly all over a face and there is less drag. I am told this razor gives some of the best shaves he has had.

So why only four stars. Once I explained the cost of the replacement blades there was a silence. Then he decided he was worth it ..........
