Retrolental Fibroplasia: A Modern Parable (A monograph in neonatology)
Retrolental Fibroplasia: A Modern Parable (A monograph in neonatology)
by William A. Silverman
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A required parable, 28 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is superb writing, both about a specific epidemic of blindness among premature infants, which many doctors would prefer to forget, and about the wider issues of medical research and testing treatments. Written before "evidence based medicine" became a buzzphrase, it shares more wisdom than most things published since.

I should not have had to buy it second hand -- it should be in paperback in every serious bookshop. And the Open University should not have sold off the copy I bought.

Optics: Paralipomena to Witelo & Optical Part of Astronomy
Optics: Paralipomena to Witelo & Optical Part of Astronomy
by Johannes Kepler
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £35.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful thinker, wonderful writer, 18 Dec. 2013

I'm still reading it.
Makes me feel Kepler is a thinker I would have loved to know, and discuss things with.

He understood a great deal of what optical thinking reached up to the 19th Century,
and then paused because it did not learn from Gauss or later geometers,
so his viewpoint is still recognisable in today's optics texts for ophthalmologists.

Selections from Kepler's Astronomia Nova (Science Classics Module for Humanities Studies)
Selections from Kepler's Astronomia Nova (Science Classics Module for Humanities Studies)
by Johannes Kepler
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Good advice, 18 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The editor's background material is not really enough for grasping Kepler's mathematical points (the selection is "for Humanities Studies"), but we get enough to enjoy his style of reasoning -- and polemic. It is still common for the preface of a scientific book to give advice to readers, on how to connect mentally with new material, but Kepler gives separate "Advice to astronomers" and "Advice to Idiots", which would well be taken by today's creationists.

Captain Vorpatril's Alliance (Miles Vorkosigan Adventures)
Captain Vorpatril's Alliance (Miles Vorkosigan Adventures)
by Lois McMaster Bujold
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £18.99

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Bujold!, 18 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You don't need to read a review of anything Bujold writes: just read the book.

And re-read it, with equal pleasure, when you know the story arc.
