ROCK JAW HYDRA V2 In Ear Headphone
ROCK JAW HYDRA V2 In Ear Headphone
Price: £39.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Not *quite* worth it, 23 Nov 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'm glad I recieved these as part of the vine programme, as I don't think they are worth the best part of £40. You could get other, cheaper and better headphones for the money.

They do have some good features - they fit well and have a good range (4) of ear buds - I often struggle with in-ear earphones but these fit very well. The cable is anti-tangle and it works well, as does the built in mic/button which will activate Siri on an iPhone - very useful for hands free use.

My main complaint is that they just don't sound punchy enough, with relatively poor bass and a flat mid range to my ears. For the same money you could have a pair of award winning SoundMagic E10S with a better bass:

They do come in a very cool box though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good trimmer, so-so shaver, 8 Nov 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The good - this is an excellent trimmer, with the battery powered trimmer at the end performing excellently.

The indifferent - the shaver itself does not shave as close as others (such as a Gillette Mach 3)

The bad - the lubricant strips easily peel off if they get wet and stick to something.

I'd recommend this to use solely as an accurate trimmer and use a different razor.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bright light but limited 5 hour run time, 7 Sep 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The good - this is a bright solar powered light with a large panel. The included wires will allow quite a lot of leeway in terms of placement and the solar panel can be attached to a wall or with a solid ground spike. The light is bright and the unit looks good and feels like it should last.

The bad - there is only a 5 hour runtime assuming a fully charged battery. The light comes on automatically as it gets dark and you will therefore not get light all night. If this is important then look for something else.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good cleaner for hard surfaces but not carpets, 7 Sep 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a useful steam cleaner but be careful what you use it for. The assembly is straight forward and there are lots of useful attachments like an oven cleaner, various brushes and a nozzle for grout etc cleaning in the bathroom/kitchen.

The main head is used with the provided detergent to clean hard floors and again the cleaner is good here.

I was however disappointed that the detergent is labelled as being unsuitable for carpets - the carpet is therefore only steamed and Vax describes this as a "refresh" as a result. I was disappointed as I wanted to use the cleaner to clean some problem areas on our carpet and without the detergent it just didn't do this. If you want a carpet cleaner I would go for a different machine.

Overall this is a good steam cleaner for hard surfaces but I would not recommend for carpets.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Our 5 year old son loves Lego but often struggles following the more
complex builds, which can lead to frustration.

This kit not only is Lego batman a firm favourite in our house but was
easy for him to construct by himself. We will definitely be looking
out for others in the Lego Juniors range. A real confidence builder.

4.0 out of 5 stars sturdy but bulky case, 29 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a bike mount for attaching your iPhone to the bike stem. The included cords held the mount securely on my road bike, even commuting over the terrible Sheffield streets. The case itself fits the iPhone snugly and clips in with a turning motion. I don't think it will fall off but helpfully there are zip ties included too if you would lime even more security. I also liked the included rain cover which clips over the front and still allows you to use the screen. In fact, with the rain cover on I was able to use the mount for an iPhone 4s too.

All good so far, but I've deducted one star for the way the case is bulky at the back where it clips to the mount. I would nit want this in my pocket which limits the case for me. It isn't a big deal - take your old case off and swap when you go for a ride - but it would have been good to have a slim case that you didn't have to change.

All in all I think this would be good for long dedicated rides but less handy for short trips or commuting. Still recommended if you don't have a high end garmin and want to use your phone as a GPS navigator/trainer.

Unwrapped Sky
Unwrapped Sky

4.0 out of 5 stars Good - but don't be put off by the Minotaurs!, 29 May 2014
This review is from: Unwrapped Sky (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Unwrapped sky is a very good start to a new fantasy/SF sequence, cast from the same mould as Nights of Viljamur or Perdido Street Station. Oddly, it starts with a group of Minotaurs, who seem bizarrely out place in the rest of the novel, only being referenced again late in the book. I'm not sure why they are there, and wondered if they were added late to fantasy things up a bit...

In essence this is tale of rebellion and change in a city stagnating and slowly decaying after a previous apocalypse. The main protagonists are well described and develop as the book progresses, and there are good ideas present in the guise of philosopher-assassins and a dangerous magical system, with intriguing references to binary code and ancient machines too,

I loved the setting and the climax builds to a series of logical but surprising reveals, with a satisfying conclusion that sets up the next book nicely. Recommended, with or without added labyrinthine creatures....

War Master's Gate (Shadows of the Apt)
War Master's Gate (Shadows of the Apt)
by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.19

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent installment, 29 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What can I say - this is book 9, so if you have read the other 8 you will know what to expect. If not, go to book 1 at once!

What I loved in War Master's gate was the deliberate way in which Adrian Tchaikovsky deliberately confounds our expectations built up over earlier books. I cannot say too much, as it would give away spoilers, but in a way things unfold as they inevitably should, and damn the heroic expectations...

Be warned - this novel has the death rate among major characters of a George RR Martin book, and leads to a tremendous climax and cliffhanger for the next volume.

A guilty pleasure, but a great one all the same.

This is a good cheap bike stand. The tripod design is sturdy and the clamp holds my seat tube very well. I liked the tool tray and delivery was prompt too. Not a professional grade piece of kit but very good for home use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not fairtrade, ok coffee, 3 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
There are sereal reasons why you might not like using Nespresso capsules: the cost, the taste, ethical concerns about Nestle's ongoing issues with formula milk promotion in developing countries, woriies about the waste involved with packaging and the fact that Nestle do not use fairtrade coffee.

The Cafepod capsules adress a few of these issues but would not make me change from my current alternative - Cafe impresso. They are slightly cheaper than Nespresso if you get free delivery, but the impresso pods are even cheaper.

The coffe itself is ok - a nice crema and reasonable body and it does make a good lungo. The packaging capsules themselves are foil-wrapped and plastic, so I'm not sure they are bettern environmentally than the standard Nespresso pods, and they are not fairtrade (which the Cafe impresso ones are).

I'll therefore be sticking to my current brand, but at these aren't made by Nestle!
