4.0 out of 5 stars Singles cover art, simple as this., 19 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book is just, as written on the cover, an art book with original size reproduction of hundreds of punk singles cover (and smaller size reproduction of many others) and for me it works, since I love the records sleeves but i don't have the time or the money needed to collect original punk records. I'm enjoying this book even if it is not perfect (and there is the occasional error, it seems, like the second single of a band listed as the third single, big issue, sure....), and, well, there are dozens of books written on punk history published, and I have a few of them, but the focus here is on the images, simple as this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost definitive., 4 Sept. 2013

One of the best compilation ever assembled, five full discs and almost every track is a gem. A few classics are missing due to license issues and other problems, so let's hope for a volume 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete tracklist., 4 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an exceptional compilation even by the high standards Strut Records have established for themselves over the years.
Discover a unique underground music scene in 1980s Italy, a scene whose varied esoteric aesthetics were a raw and deep mix of cerebral post-punk, dark industrial, new wave disco, krautrock echoes, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock'N'Roll Underworlds, 19 Dec. 2012

This review is from: Copendium-Julian Cope (Audio CD)
Absolutely fabulous compilation of experimental avant-garde rock, with a lot of tracks (especially on the second and third cds, who collect music from the last two decades) from unsung overlooked musicians who deserved a better exposure (and this was the first reasons for the Album of the Month blog that has been collected on the Copendium book). This is mostly deep listening hard psychedelic freak out music, that follow on the tradition of Blue Cheer, Stooges, Amon Duul I e II, Neu, Chrome, Flower Travelling Band, krautrock, noise, doom metal, punk and post punk, Earth, SunnO)), etc. Not everyone cup of tea probably. Compilation of the year. Nice booklet with extracts from the book. Would love a volume two!

5.0 out of 5 stars progressive rock, 6 Jun. 2011

This is another very good underground rock "label box" selection similar to the box dedicated to Deram/Decca, Island, Vertigo, Harvest and other labels. It's a good mix of great tracks and lesser ones but everything is interesting, and the box is beautiful with the informative booklet. Hope other boxes like this will be forthcoming (after the Charisma one, why not a Virgin one?, or a Brain or OHR one for not UK labels?). Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful. Would love to have a second volume., 24 Oct. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A "krautrock" compilation (and probably the not use of "krautrock" on the title have reasons, not at least that some of the music chosen is not exactly canonic and verge on electronic music of late '70 and there is some fusion and some folk) is really a difficult task, even outside licensing problems (some others kraut comps I have seen are really shameful) . The selection is indeed intriguing, full of gems, since also, as the subtitle point, no tracks from the prime really wild era of german experimental rock (67-71)with the ultra underground psychedelic often sidelongs tracks, are used (check the Julian Cope Krautrocksampler for more info). Would love to have a second volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars when you listen to Coil, C93 or NWW, do you think of music?, 16 Jun. 2003

Artist's biography books are a strange kind of literature, more often than not what you get it's just a mess of gossips mixed with second hand psychology explanation that miserably fail to really enlighten on what makes great Art from the dissected artist "real" life. Even worst than most are musician's biography, often simple depressing bad written fan rubbish.
There are exceptions, and the David Keenan book is one of this. It's a work of love for the art (music, painting, poetry) made by the people under the Nurse with Wound, Coil and Current 93 banners, and of love and admiration for those people itself. It's well written, well researched, and even if obviously you should have or should get a knowledge with the oeuvres the book chronicles, it has a life on his own (anyway a cd of music selected from the vast archive of the groups is included in the book). It's a book about obsessions: obsession by the writer and by the numerous worldwide fans (me too) for the secret history behind the often magical, deep, otherwordly, enlightening works of Coil, C93 and NWW, obsession that mirror those artist obsessions with underground, art, mystery, mystics, pataphisic, altered states, sex, religion (christianity, buddhism, asatru, paganism, shamanism), mirrors, time, drug, love, blood, cats, and the others great writers and painters and musicians of the past who charted similar territories. Based on interviews with the artist themselves, the book mainly paint a picture of the stories of Steven Stapleton, David Tibet, Jhon Balance, (former Throbbing Gristle) Peter Christopherson and their friends and relatives, but without being too much indiscrete on their privacy, focusing, as it's what really matter, on their artistic output. Said so, should I point some secondary remarks on the book? (for example: "hey Keenan, "the snow" and "windowpaine" are jewels!, what's your problem with dance music?") But since I liked to read it, didn't disappoint me, find interesting, and since C93, NWW and Coil are not only after 20 years still active but always improving (they have always been good but their work has gained levels of deepness with time and experience), I prefer wait another 20 years to read the due sequel, "England Hidden Reverse 2". Ciao.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Coil compilation (from 1984 to 2001)., 24 Oct. 2002
This double CD is the UK reissue of the two only russian anthology CDs assembled by Coil to mark their live performance in Moscow on September 2001. Those were the first two "best of" of their work Coil have ever created in twenty years. The first CD "a silver voice" features melancholy, dreamy and melodic songs, highlights beeing "Amethyst Deceivers", the extraordinary
"Lost Rivers of London", and the old "Ostia (The Death of Pasolini)" from the "Horse Rotorvator" album, plus various others tracks (expecially from the Music to Play in the Dark albums) and the rare new track "A Cold Cell".
The other CD: "a golden hair" features more aggressive, deranged, and sometimes noisy tracks, ("anal staircase", "panic") and also a new track, "A.Y.O.R.".
This is not really a "best of..." (otherwise where are "windowpaine" and "the snow" ?), but a nice selection based on a play of similar moods beetween the songs. Missing are the more experimental electronic side of Coil (like the Times Machine drones), but the compilation is really nice, expecially as an introduction to the work of one of the most outstandish and overlooked aural magickal experience of our times. Higher beeing command.
