This review is from: Dersu Uzala (DVD)
a film in 2 parts in which a solitary Mongol trapper befriends a party of Russian soldiers as they chart some of the vast Siberian taiga. He saves the life of the Russian commander when severe weather closes in.
In the 2nd part, the two meet again after a 5 year hiatus & there is a contrast between the behaviour of the Russian party & that
of a group of Chinese brigands who trap animals and carry off women with impunity.
Then Dersu shoots at a tiger.Believing he has slain the creature he is sure he has attacked his own God.
Blindness & incapabilty soon follow & he tries unsuccessfully to take up an offer of city dwelling with the Russian commander.
Afilm of heartwarming tenderness to watch time & time again.

5.0 out of 5 stars hell just got better, 7 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Good Omens (Paperback)
an hilarious collaboration between 2 authors who mine gold with all their work.A demon & an angel are trying to track down the Antichrist, but seem to have 3 possible Damiens to consider.Throw in the occasional psychic seer & a group of Hell's Angels who live up to that name ,then you have an oncoming Armageddon which could not be funnier. Marks of ten out of ten.

3 brothers board a train separately & set off to reclaim their mom, who has entered a convent after her husband's death.A main feature is failings of all kinds.Bill Murray fails to catch the train;Peter has a failing marriage. All 3 boys fail to persuade mom to go back with them. The train careens along the tracks, but fails to reach a destination. An extraordinary type of road film that I personally could watch over & over.

More Tarantino than Ealing comedy , this is nonetheless 1 of the funniest scripts about 2 failed contract killers you are likely to see. There are 2 counterpoints to this. The brutal ending. Also the Bruges scenery accompanied by Schubert's Winterreise.Perfection.

a superior entertainment. Colin confides that a major record label dumped him 20 years previously. The loss was theirs.Fine support too from a band which draws on members from both of the Americas, & from Australia.

4.0 out of 5 stars What friends are for, 25 April 2011
I think of many of the bands who have been this group's contemporaries
and wondered "how on earth do these guys keep going on?".
The answer must surely be they are like a close circle of friends
& they never take anything too seriously (apart from the musical craft, of course).
This is a curious bag of goodies.Nouveau music hall is back again
in the anthemic The Old Country.
The track Cheese & Ham has a dark undertone of trying,& failing to
meet dad's approval. The number Waiting For You and England to Return
has a summer of love feel to it that somehow feels like a shared joke.
If this group hasn't had an O.B.E. handed to it by now,I wish to know why.

4.0 out of 5 stars musica drammatica, 25 April 2011
This review is from: Anna Calvi (Digipack) (Audio CD)
There is a great theatricality to this work.I believe this may
be due in part to the work of Brian Eno.
Guitar is one part of a kaleidoscope of sounds.
Anna's voice brings emotional impact, at times fragile,as in
the track 'Morning Light'.At other times, it is triumphal
(Desire,Love won't be Leaving).
I can't help feeling there is a David Lynch film
somewhere awaiting this music as its soundtrack

If, like me, you are an old man, it is possible to feel like a gatecrasher at the young folks party.
Never mind-they compensate you in their song "We are the battery human".
These are songs for lovers of life. The vocals are Swarkowski crystal
& the lyrics have purpose.
I can listen time & time again, and do so.
