1.0 out of 5 stars Not the original versions, 22 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Oldie Hit-Box (Audio CD)
If you are of a certain age looking for all the hits from your teens etc. give this a miss!!!
These are not the single versions you remember!

The track listing for this box set is perfect IF only they had used the original recordings.
If you remember these songs you would probably be disappointed, about 135 tracks are re-recordings.
Although the artist names are correct, how many of the original members are used is anyones guess.
Quite a few tracks are definately not using the original vocalist!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The version we have all been waiting years for, 31 Oct. 2011
I won't go into detailed warblings about each track, much has been written over the years.

After many remastering attempts over the years, from dubious sourced tapes. Steve Hoffman came close, with his Ian Anderson sourced master tape, and the DCC 1997 issue.

This issue has, at last, been compiled from the original 16 and 8 track tapes, analogue to digital multi track transfer by Abbey Road, then passed on to Steven Wilson for expert remastering.
Keeping as close as possible to the original mix he has done an excellent job of bringing out a lot of previously hidden detail whilst managing to remove a lot of the previous issues/tape flaws.

If you have loved this album, but always been disappointed with the quality of previous issues, then this release is for you.

As a bonus the different versions on disc 2 are worth having, notibly the 9+ minute version of "My God" and early versions of "Wond'ring Aloud"

Thank you to EMI and Steve Wilson for at last giving us the album we Jethro Tull fans have long been hoping for.

1.0 out of 5 stars Usual overcompressed remastering, 28 May 2010
I too was looking forward to this release, hoping for a caring remaster, along the lines of last years Beatles re-issues, but unfortunately it is disappointing and is just as bad as most of the current remasters. Probably fine as downloads for Ipod's etc.
Assessing "Tumbling Dice", in Adobe Audition, it has had the top 6dB levelled across.
In other words - over limited, over compressed and all the dynamics knocked out of it. Does nobody want quality anymore? Just volume!
I will stick to the Virgin 1994 issue, still the best of a bad bunch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Only for use with hard disk drives!, 18 Oct. 2009
This card works really well with hard disk drives.
Allowing you to carry on using older drives with modern motherboards, you can connect a IDE/PATA disk to a SATA port.
Useful if no free IDE ports are available.

However only worked on 1 out of 3 optical DVD-RW drives I tried it with! So ONLY recommended for Hard Disk Drives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Check with supplier first!, 23 Aug. 2009
The description for this item is for cloth lined - holds 2 CD/DVD pouches - with side binder holes.
I advise to check with supplier as both "InternetCartridges" and "Terrabok", maybe others, are supplying single disc plain unlined sleeves for this item!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pity some Harry tracks taken from Vinyl, 5 July 2006
'Harry' is an excellent album, which I have played continuously since I bought it back in 1974. So I have been hoping for a CD release for years.

Catherine's writing and performance cannot be faulted, whether from the up-tempo 'Hot Night' to the spine tingling 'When the Sparrow Flies'.

'Silent Mother Nature' is a new album to me. After relatively few listenings the magic of Catherine's writing and emotive vocals are already appreciated especially on the tracks 'Keep Me Talking' and 'You Make Me'.

This CD cannot be faulted for musical content.

However, purchasers should be advised that tracks 1,2,3,5 and 8 have been transffered from vinyl, as the master tapes have been lost! There is noticeable LP surface noise, especially on track 1.

For content, value for money and packaging this release still gets 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Re-Mastering Oops !!, 14 Jun. 2006
This review is from: Let Me Be There (Audio CD)
This is a comment rather than a review, I agree with what has already been said.

I have always loved this album and I was pleased to find this CD, to replace my old LP copy.

However, the person who did the re-mastering (not named) has made a mistake and cut off the first drum beat on the last track "If We Try" !!

Although it doesn't spoil the enjoyment of the album, it does stand out to anyone who has the vinyl copy.
