A really well written and powerful book. This should be read by all lovers of freedom. It exposes the full horror of post war socialism in eastern Europe. The suffering of the Poles at the hands of first Hitler and then Stalin is brought to life. You have to pinch yourself to remember that the fall of the Berlin Wall was not very long ago as this book describes what appears to be another world in which big brother ruled supreme.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mrs T, 20 May 2013

Although I am still reading the book it is extremely well written and easy to read. The book tells us a lot more about Mrs Thatcher the person as well as bringing many interesting insights into her early life. As many of us who remember her as a Prime Minister were not born when she first entered parliament it is interesting to read about life in the 1950's and 1960's. Those times are very different from the prosperity of today.

It ia also interesting to read about her poltical journey , both as a female politican and how her ideas developed.

Charles Moore has been fortunate to have access to so many people who have been willing to share their thoughts with him.

Joffrey's War: A Sherwood Forester in the Great War
Joffrey's War: A Sherwood Forester in the Great War
by Geoffrey Ratcliff Husbands
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sherwood Forester in the Great war, 25 Dec 2012

A very fine first world war history , unusually not written by an officer. This is as much a social history of the the men from Derbshire and Nottinghamshire who answered their country's call in 1914 as a war history. Geoffrey Husband writes well and captures the atmosphere of both the "Chatties" (16 Sherwood Foresters) and 1/8 Sherwood Foresters.

High points include the mock court Martial organised by Little Alf Syson and the horror of Thiepval. Throughout the book Geoffrey Husband captures the character of his fellow soldiers and the ethos of the civilian soldier. The book captures the mixture of boredom and terror of active service. The book covers a long period of basic training , three periods in the line and two major battles.

The book is complementary to offical regimental histories and it gives the experience of a junior NCO. The history of 1/8 Sherwood Foresters in the Great War is also worth reading

The War History of the Fifth Battalion The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derby Regiment 1914 - 1918
The War History of the Fifth Battalion The Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derby Regiment 1914 - 1918
by L W de (Intro W Thwaites, Apprec: A Hacking, Comm: J D Kerr) Grave
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars 5th Sherwood Foresters in The Great War, 18 Dec 2012
A well written history of a fine Territorial Battalion. The history captures the dry humour of the Derbshire Volunteer Soldier. This history captures the low of Gommecourt with 80% casulaties and the breaking of the Hindenburg Line in September 1918. A roll of honour is included and a map of the Battalion's Journey on the Western Front. Unfortuneately our political class have rewarded this generation's sacrifice with the destruction of both fine county regiments and their territorial battalions.

Excellent book. Great review of individual seats and MPs. Useful lists of marginal seats and key votes.

Editions like this one covering new boundaries are very helpful. Cannot wait for the new edition after the 2013 boundary changes.

Generally over the years each edition has been more informative but this and the fifth edition have been the most interesting

5.0 out of 5 stars once a hussar, 20 Jan 2011

This review is from: Once A Hussar (Paperback)
A real well written book which captures life in the build up to the war. It captures the values of a generation who put duty and love of country before personal gratification. The book captures the spirit of pre war territorials as well as the relationship between Ray and his brother. The book captures the change in these young soldiers as they moved from peace time soldiering to active service. As they fight their way to Knightsbridge the pre war territorials are gradually reduced in number and joined by younger soldiers. This was a generation that gave their today for our tomorrow and this book shows them at their finest. The South Notts Hussars could stand up to the German Army but Brown and Blair have reduced their numbers and replaced their unique cap badge. The contrast between Ray Ellis 's generation and today's gutless politicans is so great it is difficult to believe that we are the same people .

Esposito and Elting 's excellant Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars covered the Peninsula War in 10 pages. This brillant atlas does the same job in 400 pages ! This atlas is comprehensive and very clear and it is possible to identify the positions of individual regiments in major battles. This is probably the best, clearest and most comprehensive military Atlas I have ever seen. It is also great value for money.

This was the first and finest book on the Somme which includes the recollections of the men who were there. It is a fine memorial to Kitchener's army , the territorials and the regulars who fought on 1 July 1916. It is a book I regularly return too - I was given it in 1971 !

3.0 out of 5 stars 2010 election, 3 Oct 2010

If it were not for Amazon it would be seriously overpriced. It is not a patch on the Almanac of British Politics although it has the major advantage of be published much faster after the election.
My major critism relates to the list of maginal seats that fails to include constituency names! Instead of being squashed into one page , each party's seats should be listed from the most marginal to safest and indicating which party is second.

A very well written book about a very fine TA battalion. Written shortly after the great war it captures the spirit of a job well done. It covers important actions such as Gommecourt and the breaking of the Hindenburg Line. It also includes a roll of honour. It is good to have a copy of the book which is not a photocopy of the original and thus much easier to read.
