This album is a great listen, The singer has a great voice. She can sing in many styles and has wonderful control. The other performers are also tip top. I do not normally buy this type of music, but after seeing and hearing her and her band on Jules Holland's New Year's Eve programme I just had to get the CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Plastic bag too thin., 28 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This 12.75 kg bag is supposed to be an economy size. The trouble is the packaging, which is not up to the job.
The outer plastic bag (Amazon's bag) was too thin.
The inner plastic bag was too thin. Not tough enough.
Niger seeds are tiny but sharp. Hundreds, maybe thousands of seeds had cut their way out. When I opened the outer bag hundreds of seeds spilled onto the floor. The inner bag was perforated by the seeds. Lifting it caused a further shower of seeds onto the floor.
I carried the bag into the garage, where major spillage occurred. The bag was full of holes.
Not really value for money when you have to keep "hoovering" the floor.

Curves and Jars 2: Fractal Music (Remastered)
Curves and Jars 2: Fractal Music (Remastered)
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars All 26 pieces in their original order., 20 Dec. 2014
Back in the early 1990s Barry Lewis composed a series of pieces using fractal geometry equations to choose the pitches of the notes. There was a total of 26 pieces. These "Curves and Jars" were "performed" at a public concert in Newcastle-upon-Tyne shortly after their completion.
In 1994 a CD (called 'Curves and Jars') was released on the MPS Music and Video label. Only 20 tracks were on that original CD. It was not possible to include all 26 pieces.
Now, this new release (download only) does contain all 26 pieces in their original order, re-mastered from the composer's original DAT. The 6 pieces missed off the 1994 CD are described here as bonus tracks.
All 26 tracks are fascinating. Lewis has created a truly imaginative and enjoyable musical experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic soundscapes, 27 Sept. 2014
This music is truly amazing. The composer displays masterful control over the dynamics and spacial presence of each sonic element. Some pieces use mainly synthesised sounds; others incorporate field recordings. The resulting soundscapes provide a fantastic experience for the listener. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks NMC, 23 April 2014

This is about Casken's ORION OVER FARNE.
At last this wonderful piece of orchestral music is available on CD.
It has been broadcast a few times on BBC Radio 3 (I have a cassette recording of the 1984 pemière) but I could never understand why it was not recorded for CD release. Now here it is - after 30 years. Wonderful. It is a sheer joy from beginning to end. Casken takes the listener on a journey which is full of emotion, ever changing, ever inventive. I find it truly amazing that the human brain can create such complex yet beautiful art. John Casken is one of England's greats.
The performance by the Hallé is excellent; a great recording. (It was actually recorded on my 65th birthday. I wish I could have been there.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful concerto, 14 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Casken: Cello Concerto (Audio CD)
I first heard this cello concerto at the 1991 HCMF - Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. The cellist was Heinrich Schiff, as on this CD. (It might have been a world or UK première on that occasion; I don't remember.) The concerto is beautiful. Yes, it is a "modern" work, but there are many lyrical episodes, which are very moving. The work deserves to be performed more often. This CD is excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Pluto please., 28 Dec. 2013
The ending of The Planets is ruined by the addition of Pluto. Why oh why did Colin Matthews write it? It should only be performed as an occasional concert overture, never after The Planets. In a live performance the silence after Neptune is one of the most powerful aural experiences in all music. It's a good job Holst is not around to hear that silence destroyed in this way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware!, 29 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I listened to part of this on Spotify and decided to buy the CDs from Amazon, mainly to obtain the synopsis and libretto on the CD-ROM. The opera is supposed to be on 3 CDs. The fourth disc is supposed to be the CD-ROM but it is, in fact, disc 3 incorrectly labelled. So the box actually contains 4 audio CDs, 3 and 4 being identical audio discs. There is no CD-ROM.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chandos Prize 1984, 24 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Refractions (Audio CD)
Professor (John) Michael Clarke is a graduate of St Chad's College, Durham University. He is Director of the Electroacoustic Music Studio at the University of Huddersfield.
As a composer his works (which include both acoustic and electroacoustic pieces, most often combining these media) have received many performances and broadcasts throughout the world. In 1983 Soundings (cello and tape) won the CIM France prize at Bourges, in 1984 "Uppvaknande" (for computer generated tape) was awarded the Chandos Prize at Musica Nova in Glasgow, and in 1997 he was awarded the Musica Nova Prize in Prague for the octophonic tape work "Tim(br)e" (not recorded here).
I love the music on this CD, especially the piece that won the Chandos prize.
