Amazing phone, awful support and updates, 15 Nov 2010
Samsung has produced an amazing phone, it's just a shame that Samsung also provides such awful support and updates. The phone should get five stars, but the update process from Samsung is so bad that the user experience reduces this rating to one star.
I spent hours reading reviews and comparisons and am completely happy with this phone. I consider it equal to the iPhone 4, and if you have two Google/gmail accounts, this is amazing, as is the Google Voice account (for now only beneficial when in the US).
With Android, you can expect updates every six months or so, and if you plan on keeping this phone a few years, you're looking at a minimum of 3-6 updates.
Samsung has done an incompetent job of both creating and delivering updates. For instance, Froyo (Android 2.2) was released by Google in the summer, and after Samsung promised an update for September, they delayed until October, releasing it mid-October only to withdraw it a few days later realizing it was full of software bugs. They finally re-releasing it in early November.
And that's where the problems just begin. You MUST own a windows pc to update Froyo. Linux or Mac user? You are SOL. Yes, with Samsung, a linux-based phone *needs* Windows to be running natively to be updated via Samsung's KIES software. It won't even work on VirtualBox or any other virtual copy of Windows running on top of a Mac or Linux machine.
This is a major problem because over the air updates (OTA) are not available, so if you want to update your phone, you need to install the KIES program on someone's Windows computer.
I don't know if Samsung are incompetent or just don't care about the 20% of their customers who don't own Windows computers. Either way, you will have an amazing phone for a few months until you realize that updating your phone, something that every other phone company helps their customers with, may be a source of major hassle and pain.
Long story short - if you have a Windows PC, this is a great phone, albeit with an annoying and delayed update procedure. If you don't have a Windows PC, then seriously consider getting an Andriod from a company other than Samsung.
