5.0 out of 5 stars Organize paragraphs brilliantly, 5 Jan. 2012
We bought this book to teach our dyslexic son how to organize paragraphs when writing. It is brilliant and has certainly achieved our objective. It appears basic but teaches skills applicable for writing descriptive essays. It is perhaps best suited to children who are struggling to write about 50-100 words for an answer. We thought our son did not write because he found it difficult to construct sentences but it was because he couldn't organize it into coherent paragraphs, go figure! Using a prescriptive formula, his mind was free to concentrated on the content and spelling. We were so impressed we have bought books 1-4. The series takes pupils though other forms of essays.

5.0 out of 5 stars For many social scientists, 3 Dec. 2011
I very much like this book. It gives you a terrific overview of the main approaches to political studies. This is relevant to social studies more generally at a post-graduate level. If you need to understand perspectives - buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars For PhD to experienced academics, 2 Jun. 2010
This book is for academic study. It takes you from thinking about what to research through to the finished paper. Anne Huff is an experienced academic who has taught this aspect of scholarship to more junior academics in Europe and the USA. The book is crammed full of exercises to do. So that you can practically understand where you are positioned as an acadademic author. I would recommend this wholeheartedly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic critique of evaluation methods, 14 Dec. 2008
This review is from: Realistic Evaluation (Paperback)
This book is more than it seems. It is not simply a book about how to evaluate, it is a critique of the prevailing input-output techniques that might tell you whether a programme works but cannot tell you how it works. The book is part of the critical realist approach to research. This is a book that is intended for a more academic audience, not that it is inaccessible. As far as i am concerned as someone who has evaluated national programmes it is a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for academics, 6 Dec. 2007
This book is one of the most thumbed on my bookshelf. At some point when I'm writing I will consult it, whether it's to think about the topic or to checklist the 'finished' product. It also takes you into the mechanics of searching for a good topic. Its starting point is the analogy of the academic paper as conversation. For the beginning journal writer, it provides a series of tasks that can guide you through to the finished paper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to different strategies, 12 Feb. 2002
This book examines the different strategies and systems used in soccer. What I was looking for is something that examines the merits and demerits of each system in more detail than was present in this book. Good introduction to systems used by Barcelona etc. I may be unrealistic.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent primer and useful for post-docs too, 12 Feb. 2002
The book covers the typical issues in conducting a literature review in the social sciences. It covers the role of the lit review. How to review. Classifying and reading research. Analysing arguments. Organising ideas. Mapping and expressing ideas. The later sections bring to light the real purpose of the review: not to read everything written on x but to put the reasons for your study within the context of the past research in a topic and explore the ideas that have underlain progress in a topic. Excellent
