A Passion Play: The Story of Ian Anderson & Jethro Tull
A Passion Play: The Story of Ian Anderson & Jethro Tull
by Brian Rabey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £13.48

3.0 out of 5 stars A wasted chance to make a gem!, 24 Oct. 2015

I've been waiting for this book about 15 years - since I've heard about Brian Rabey's work and had a chance to take a look of few first chapters on the Internet. The parts I've read indicated a potential to be the best Tull book ever been written. Then it was re-did and delayed in print over and over again over the years.
OK, Tull was no more, but still we have a book to read. Fully authorised, with insight look and rare interviews etc. etc. etc. What else should be done to produce the ultimate Tull Bible? Have no idea.
But the result is far from my expectations. After the great start the book turned into very uneven compilation of absolutely unnessessary trivia and short interview bits (with some interesting moments 'though), not quite chronological and a huge amount of band's history is totally missed.
I cannot say this is a bad book, but it cannot hold a candle for the Tull's printed classics like David Rees' Minstrels In The Gallery or Greg Russo's Flying Colours.
I wish one day Mr. Rabey will provide us his original 1998 version to read.

JETHRO TULL The A New Day Tapes Volume 2
JETHRO TULL The A New Day Tapes Volume 2
by David Rees & Martin Webb
Edition: Paperback
Price: £20.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great as the part one, 13 Sept. 2015

The second part is interesting, but not quite as the first one. The timeline ends in 2008 - and departure of Martin Barre is not covered at all. However, the book is highly recommended for those who cannot access to the New Day fanzine in the pre-WWW era.

Not a great album like Maddy's work in the past (Year, Flesh & Blood, Ravenchild), still has some good tracks to listen.
Must have for Maddy's fans. The rest will enjoy it (or not, depends on your love to folk music).

5.0 out of 5 stars Best effort from Tull camp in last ten years, 31 Oct. 2013

Excellent guitar work from the ex-Jethro Tull axe-man, Mr. Martin Lancelot Barre.
Great mix of Tull's classic and new accoustic works.
Best effort from the Tull's camp since Ian Anderson's The Secret Language Of Birds.
Head and shoulders above market hype called Thick As A Brick 2.
Highly recommended!

Great document of the last Rainbow tour (well, first part of it). Ritchie fires at full speed and Doogie White's voice is strong enough to hold a candle in old Rainbow and Deep Purple classics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great band at the times of the dusk, 30 Oct. 2012

Steeleye Span are old. They are good musicians and Maddy Prior was the voice of Ye Olde Englande once, but the clock is ticking, and they all are getting more and more older. That's life - and there's no one to blame about it. So frankly speaking this album is not as good and energetic as Live At Last or Tonight The Night. On the other hand the overall impression is good, and for Steeleye Span long-time fans this is another present - especially if you are far away from England and the band is still not packing their gears to visit YOUR country :-)

Didn't care much for best-of disc, but the CD2 is a gem. Famous Stivell masterpiece finally at great sound quality! Hope that Universal will release more remasters of Alan's early works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good example of latest BN shows, 25 Oct. 2012

While some fans claimed that the show was heavily edited and few tracks were left off, I must point that the single CD with a newest material makes better impression without some old standards already released on Past Times With Good Company, Castles & Dreams and Paris Moon. If you are a long time BN fan like me, this is must have. Band sounds much more tightly and enthusiastic than on the latest studio CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb albums, terrible remaster., 7 Nov. 2006
First of all, these two albums are true gems. Unique mix of flamenco and progressive rock, still sound fresh and energetic over the years.
Both were out of print more the decade, so I've waiting for them desperately.
But, I have no idea why, both albums suffers from heavy tape hiss and distortions, clearly audible from time to time, esp. in quiet parts. What went wrong? Is my copy flawed or is this a mistake of pressing? Don't ask me, ask Angel Air engineers. I'm going to get myself Japanese paper sleeve edition. You are my last hope, Japan!

PS. The Japanese version is head and shoulders above this one. Still not totally perfect sound 'though, but far, far away. Brilliant design as always. Don't be a greedy prick, buy this one! Domo arigato, Nippon!!! Banzai!!!
