This is a very well thought out and written alternate history of what happens if the Britannians (the inhabitants of Roman Britannia) discover the stirrup. It follows the career of Cato from the end of the first book through a campaign in Southern Scotland and its aftermath.
My only possible complaint is that it is too short but every word counts and there is no waffle unlike some 1000 page + stories.
There are two surprises in store when you read this and they are both worth it.
I've read the first volume several times and have thoroughly enjoyed it every time. I more than suspect that this will be the same.
BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT

I bought this years ago and have just reread it. It is well worth getting hold of a copy and reading. I don't get all the allusions to other detectives but did spot the avatars of Nero Wolfe, Archie Goodwin and Clouseau. There are others I'm just not well read enough in dective stories to work them out.

I remember reading some of this thirty odd years ago and enjoying it. So when I found it again I jumped at the chance. It is a well written pastiche of both Doyle and Wells with Challenger being even more obnoxious than in his stories and an unusual take on Mrs Hudson. It is a lot better than most new Sherlock stories only to be rivalled by the Solar Pons stories by August Derleth.

This is by far the best of the Anno Dracula series and the others are by no means bad, just not as good. i devoured this in one sitting. It is all the better for not having Sherlock Holmes as a major character although he is sorely missed by some. Read and enjoy.

Thoroughly enjoyed this especially as James T Kirk is considered to be at best an unwelcome maverick even though it can be seen that he does save the day. It makes a nice change from the unalloyed hero worship of most of TOS novels.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's the mistakes, 10 Aug 2013

This is an awful read because of what happens. It is quite well written the plot follows its own internal logic but thank god we don't live in this history. Also given what happens it is very unlikely that either the Mosquito or Lancaster would have been developed in this world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not canon but still good, 10 Aug 2013

Ok this must now be considered to be set in a star trek alternate universe , especially a mirror alternate universe, given that the Terran Empire survives in this story. However it is still a cracking good read with characters who resemble those from the tv series. The dolphin can be a bit much but does add to the plot. read this and be pleasantly surprised

I can't put my finger on the reason but this was not as much fun as I expected let alone hoped. It is quite well written, given the premise the plots make sense but there is something lacking in the delivery.

Not great literature, and I'm not sure how Conan fitted in all his adventures in anything like a normal lifetime. However an excellent way to while away some spare time.
