This album is simply stunning. Its low key and all the better for it, but not any shrinking violet. there are melodies and tunes here to die for. the acoustic mainly arrangements though work and its so hard to box this into a genre. yep, its a touch retro and fans of the late 60s early 70s work of Nick Drake John Martyn should see this as a progression rather than a copy. It has atmosphere by the bundle. Swimming is wonderful as is opener track . And who can not like ' Dog walkers of the new age'. A great LP, and definately not part of the 'new boring' movement in contemporary folk.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wish I wasn't there, 10 Dec 2012
i've seen FairPort more than 45 times. I was at The Cropredy recording of this LP. It was an absolutely painfullly bad experiance, The reworking of this is beyond bad. Around me in the crowd people started off dutifully listening, but it was'nt long before we were all shouting 'This is crap'! And boy it was. One humourless dirge after another, a dogs breakfast of an album. Ok, it has two almost good tracks on it, John Lee, and Wake up John, but two tracks don't make and album. Fairport have done at least 6 great LPs ( Debut, What we did on our holidays, Unhalfbricking , Liege and Lief , Full House, Angel Delight and Rising for the Moon) . Get them and enjoy. this Lp is like fingernails on a blackboard. Awful, middle of the road rubbish.

This film isn't very long compared to some others ( say Woodstock), but that does leave you wanting more rather than less !
The way its filmed, is superb and the music is great too. you don't actually have to have a enthusiasm for Festival music of the 70s to enjoy this, I'd recommend it to anyone who goes to Glastonbury thesedays as way of getting in the mood and a way of finding oout how it all began. yep there is nudity and drugs here, but also some cracking music. the Terry Reid clip is surely one of the best film clips of live music there has ever been. stoned immaculate . And I am one who thinks that music should be enjoyed live, so I attend a lot of gigs, I dont normally think live film footage always works, but hey this does. This is a cheap DVD and would make a great present for some one , or yourself ! Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Pinnacle and peak., 31 May 2012
This review is from: Full House (Audio CD)
As well documented the line up of Fairport had changed again. In came Dave Pegg, out went Sandy and Ashley. The line up wonderfully caught on the Maidstone 1970 DVD . and the House Full album released later on, but this is what all the fuss was about. The great Full House LP. All things had led them here, Liege and Lief and so on, and here it is a storming rocking Folk Rock classic. Fairport made a few decent tracks after this, and the odd half decent LP , but after this LP it really was down hill all the way to the 80s. When you hear the poor quality material they have released in the 80s/90s and so on it makes this LP all the better. Sloth a long classic, almost Grateful dead meets Fairport, the instrumentals, Fairport you can dance to ! Its all good. You only NEED a few Fairport LPs. This is one of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff with a Thin Lizzy connection !!!!, 1 Jan 2011
I first heard this because of Thin Lizzy ! yep , with all the mention of classic underground folk it's worth remembering that Clodagh Simmonds was a mate of Thin Lizzy and plays on 'Shades of a Blue Orphange' , Thin Lizzys second album. She does the 'folky' stuff on that ( great ) Lp made before Thin lizzy became a rock band. From that I found this ! and I love it !

4.0 out of 5 stars Hawkwinds spacey bits !, 31 Dec 2010
Well I do love it when Hawkwind rock out ! However, sometimes I just love the classic Hawkwind 'spaced out' bits, and this fits the bill! Lovers of Hawkwind and also Steve Hillage etc and even early Orb , and that spaced out festival vibe should love this. It also works well as a showcase for Harvey Bainbridge himself and shows what he is capable of solo. He was far more important in shaping the Hawkwind sound in his era than many remember and it is the keyboards he seems happiest with. Its a good LP this one from a good bloke and it makes a good atmosphere. Of course, you still need to get Levitation but its a capable album and worth any collector of this sort of stuff having.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great live band, then and now, 8 Dec 2010
I was too young to see them in 71, but this Cd makes up for it. In fact I only got into Quintessence by seeing the modern day Maha Dev's Quintessence perform all the old classics remarkably well. ( Still touring in 2010 and 2011) Since then Ive back tracked ! and this is a good start to getting the Quintessence live sound . I would recomend seeing the modern day line up and would recomend listening to this , the 'classic' line up !

5.0 out of 5 stars When youve run out of CSN to buy !, 4 Dec 2010
This review is from: Homecoming (Audio CD)
This album is great ! It really doesn't matter at all that some may say they jumped on the bandwagon set rolling by Crosby Stills and Nash, it really doesnt matter if this was recorded by the Muppetts, It's a great album!. Lyriaclly it works well, the songs are adventurous and strong and i find it a very consistant LP. Even the great Crosby Stills and Nash had great problems with keeping an album consistent and many of their LPs have real stinkers on. This though has none. I would highly recommend thsi LP to anyone who has an interest in that eras post Woodstock folk rock. This album is faultless but unfortunately , though everyone should have Americas first two LPs the quality of their Lps started to dip after Homecoming as they started to go a bit ' drippy'. But , remember them when they were great and buy this !

'Hymn' is BJH's Marmite ! You either love it or find it a bit cringy. However apart from that song this is a very listenable LP. Production harmonies and so on are fantastic and for me, Hard Hearted Woman is a classic. Its understated, not an 'in yer face' sort of track, but the little keyboard bits work wonderfully. Whilst I beleieve that BJH probably did some stronger songs on earlier LPs, ( She Said , Mockingbird etc) I do find thsi the LP that I actually play more, and on that basis alone I'd recomend it. Personally though , although often labelled Progressive, I find that a not really correct way of labelling this fine album. Genre wise its pretty standard Mid 70s, CSN and Y meets , err early BJH ! and isnt pushing musical boundaries in any true sence. I do somethimes think the word 'progressive' gets over used.
