As Waldemar Januszczak said in his excellent DVD series on Vincent, it would be too simplistic to think of him as everyones favourite uncle; he was much more complex than that. This superb book, so well written that its length is not noticeable in the reading of it, presents Vincent as a human being; by turn as vulnerable, flawed, tricky, obstinate and wonderfull as all of us are.
