Good quality, better made than my previous clip-ons, ingenious, non-fiddly spring attachment where you simply pull the shades 'apart' so they quickly fit on your specs. Only thing I had an issue with, is that in the featured picture the frames look chromed, whereas in fact they are a smokey grey colour. Apart from that, I'd recommend these.

1.0 out of 5 stars An 'Historical Belch'., 13 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I regret buying this book, that's to say, spending good money on it, since it barely warrants being described as history. The author seems to think that pulling apart the works of three actual historians (Jackel, Johnson and Lukacs) to draw an incredibly weak, barely researched and rather pointless conclusion is a valid work history, especially since historians have covered Hitler's relationship to Darwin quite extensively and intelligently, but without coming to such a 'conclusive' judgement. The book references none of these writers, but draws heavily on 'cut and pasted' sections of three books by the above three authors, large sections of Mein Kampf, The Second Book, and a variety of speeches, with sentences crassly highlighted in 'bold' to make the authors point. The text is repetative, turgid and betrays a disinct lack of knowledge of the historiography of Hitler, the Third Reich, Nazism, and the history of racial Social-Darwinism in Germany in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Unfortunately for the author, there is zero proof that Hitler actually read Darwin or Haeckel (Although I believe he repudiated the Darwinian idea of a single point of origin for our species),and it remains a matter of speculation and/or research, as to how he came to hold his crude views on race and 'the iron laws of nature' with respect of his ideology, or 'worldview'. I suspect this work was written with the sole aim of exploiting the enduring interest in the 'funny little man with the moustache' and purely for commercial gain.
Their is nothing useful in this book for serious students of the subject, and nothing to be gained from even trying to find anything useful. To paraphrase Josef Goebbels on Alfred Rosenberg, this bok is merely an 'historical belch'.

1.0 out of 5 stars Abysmal, 10 Jan 2013
This review is from: Iron Sky [DVD] (DVD)
A prime turkey, lamentable, appalling, excruciating and embarrassing to watch. As so many others have said, a great idea wasted, and like them I was expecting a tongue-in-cheek kitsch 'B' movie satire, but what I got was nearly two hours of indescribably bad acting, poor script, poor plotting and even some shoddy editing that failed to lighten the tedium. It was a 'B' movie of a 'B' movie, and when compared to that other hunk of crowdsourced cinematic dross 'Snakes on a Plane' fell flat on its teutonic face. The special effects were really quite good, and perhaps its a sign of the times that SFX can now outshine human performance abilities, but you can certainly tell the nerds were in on the act with the Soyuz spacestaion becoming a battlecruiser (such a weak idea) and the neofolk, Laibach sub-nazis input was also in evidence, lacking any imagination at all. It was like a film made by committee, and I wonder if the director was just incredibly lazy...The fact that this film was a Finnish-Australian co-production too is very evident by their apparent lack of knowledge of nazism and of the whole genre of Nazisploitation films, a shame when you think of 'Salon Kitty', 'lsa, She-Wolf of the SS' and others (or even that classic nazi Star Trek episode!). God only knows why the Sarah Palin character was introduced (couldn't act), to be 'topical'and politically 'satirical' I suppose(didn't work) and to sell the film to the US market, that and the black astronaut who was some kind of throwback to OJ Simpson in the Airplane movies,(could barely act and certainly wasn't handsome enough to have been the model his character supposedly was). Turning the guy into an 'Aryan' wasn't funny either (an old idea- see the classic civil rights film 'The Watermelon Man' which took an actually comedic look at racism). The film's 'humour' was aimed at the lowest common denominator but certainly seems to have satisfied the intellectually challenged and the those still stuck in pre-pubescence. Luckily this was a christmas present, so I spent not one penny on it, but I did waste both time and electricity watching it. The only bit I enjoyed was seeing the gorgeous Julia Dietze's uniform torn off in an open airlock, but that was IT.

-MASSIVE FAIL!

5.0 out of 5 stars All of America in three covered wagons..., 29 Dec 2012
This review is from: Meek's Cutoff [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
This film is about modern America as much as it is about its beginnings and it cracks the myth of the heroic pioneer. Meek is a cross between a mountain man bar-room braggart and a snake-oil salesman, the pioneers, simple hardy people, some seeking a New Jerusalem, a fortune or just a decent life, their 'womenfolk' it turns out, are the the strongest and most sensible amongst them. 'The Indian' painted as a savage by Meek has more dignity than all the 'civilised' whites put together, in contrast to Meek's blood-curdling tales of indian atrocity. A film of great clarity, depth and mystery, beautifully shot and acted. 'Meek's Cut off' also stands as a warning; and this is made plain in the last enigmatic words at the end of the film, which point to the return of considerable uncertainty about the 'American Dream'- a sense of a lack of direction, the scarcity of natural resources, the destructive power of racism, and above all, fear.

Definitely not one for the John Wayne fans.

Similar in feeling to the less subtle, but no less enjoyable-

Those of us interested in real history can soon detect more than a whiff of Hitler-rehabilitation around this book. I bought the original version, and needless to say enjoined battle with the self-published, non-peer reviewed author and her 'friends'...Now that book has been de-listed, presumably because it was so awful, and so many people attacked it's historical veracity that it was no longer viable. A few points I feel morally obliged to make-

1. The nazis used foreign legions across all fronts during the second world war. Ooh!

2. These rag-tag groups of traitors, anti-semites, adventurers, fellow-travellers and misguided anti-imperialists included non-european ethnicities. Wow!

3. The fact that the nazis opportunistically used these 'volunteers' out of desparation, (having decimated their own manpower by invading the Soviet Union) does NOT mean the nazis weren't vicious, genocidal RACISTS. Hitler himself describing black people as 'apes', and had plans to expand his sociopathic empire into Africa producing something very like the revolting South African Apartheid system. Oh.

4. Readers of serious intent should read- Hitler's Black Victims: The Historical Experiences of European Blacks, Africans and African Americans During the Nazi Era: The Historical Experience ... (Crosscurrents in African American History),Hitler's African Victims: The German Army Massacres of Black French Soldiers in 1940 , Destined to Witness: Growing Up Black in Nazi Germany and Other Germans: Black Germans and the Politics of Race, Gender, and Memory in the Third Reich (Social History, Popular Culture and Politics in Germany) for a more rounded view, or perhaps as an antidote. Aha...

5. Naturally, there are those out there who may be thrilled by the novelty of so-called 'Black Nazis' (actually an insulting title in itself!), and this minor fact of historical interest,is actually overshadowed by those German soldiers of Jewish origin who fought 'for' Hitler in the Wehrmacht- Hitler's Jewish Soldiers: The Untold Story of Nazi Racial Laws and Men of Jewish Descent in the German Military (Modern War Studies)- But note that the author of this book does not entitle it 'Jewish Nazis'- and for obvious reasons...D'oh!

6. I have no doubt that this twisted book will go down very well with revisionists, neo-nazi skinheads (what an xmas 'stocking filler'!- or should that be 'boot-filler'?), American Germanophiles of all stripes and slavering NWO/ZOG conspiracy theorists...But in truth, you might as well get your nazi wet-dream jollies from this instead-Collectible Spoons of the 3rd Reich. Allez!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rivetting!, 11 April 2012

Made in what was possibly the Golden age of British television drama, 'Survivors' survives as great drama- I've only watched 4 episodes of this boxset, and I'm as capitvated as I was as a child- and I realise just how influential the series was on my worldview. For a series made in the seventies, the plot, pace and dialogue seem incredibly modern and the acting is generally superb- with fine performances from a host of terrific british character actors.

Naturally, the subject matter is very grim, very gritty, not like the saccharin, polished, safe pap you get today (and yes, that includes the re-make!)- in a decade of grim television (World at War, Bouquet of Barbed Wire, Colditz, Gangsters) 'Survivors' stood out as it addressed the very real fears of an impending war of annihilation between the West and the Soviet Union, whether nuclear, biological or chemical, the insecurity caused by the oil crisis and the resurgence of class warfare across Europe, all of which was somewhat apochalyptic to say the least, especially when power cuts, riots, bombings and strikes were a regular occurrence in the UK...

Despite the fact that the surviving characters were largely middle-class professional types,(reflecting the BBCs demographic?) the series is consistantly based on actual, practical, reality and what is striking is that the main protagonist is a woman- pretty radical, even for the Beeb in 1975! Then there is the ever-threatening 'British Government' various self-appointed gangs of thugs trying to impose their 'authority' on everyone else, despite the fact that civilisation has gone down the plughole- variously lead by tin-pot fascists, warlords and power-hungry trade union leaders (!) The choice of social system ultimately comes down to either feudal dictatorship or agrarian libertarian communism...

The outstanding feature of the whole series is the way social, economoic, ethical and philosophical issues are raised within each plotline- God forbid that anything like it would be made today, I mean, TV that actually makes you THINK!? Complaints would be made!

Get this series, enjoy the drama, enjoy having your mind stimulated, imagine a world without all of this techno-junk, and get ready for the soon to be imminent eschaton!

3.0 out of 5 stars An agonising read!, 10 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was looking forward to reading this exposition on the 'new military urbanism' on the recommendation of a friend, but what I found was disappointing to say the least. The first half of this book was an excruciating plough through a veritable swamp of post-post-modern verbiage, repetition, unforgivable errors and grammatical nonsense (Is proof-reading a dead art?). I would have thought, given the author's political leanings, that he would have aimed at as wide an audience as possible rather than burying any useful information under the inaccessible rubble of pointless academic theory, specious jargon and Americanisms worthy of G.W.Bush himself. For example,I have never heard the word 'carcerality' in my entire life, and frankly, I never hope to again. Apart from this pearl of gibberish, there is the question of the, seemingly unending, over-use of theoretical terms such as 'Othering', 'archipelago' and 'Bordering' (like the author was looking to score some points in the multiple use of conceptual terminology). I have rarely encountered a book so impossibly, and nigh-on impenetrably, written as this, almost as if he set out to sabotage his own work as he wrote, because his writing style seemed designed to put the reader off.

Concepts were lumped together in shopping list-type sentence structures over and over again, breaking any narrative flow that had been built up, jarring the reader with their frequency and their consequent annoyance factor. Such as-
P.62:
'The second trend is the unprecedented extent to which the new military urbanism fuses and blurs civilian and military applications of the technologies for control, surveillance, communications, simulation and targeting'
P.63:
'Among these threats are mobile pathogens, malign computer codes, financial crashes, 'illegal' migration, transnational terrorism, state infrastructural warfare, and the environmental extremes triggered by climate change'
P.65:
'Technologies such as the internet, virtual reality, jet travel, data mining, closed-circuit TV, rocketry, remotecontrol, microwaves, radar, global positioning, networked computers, wireless communications, satellite surveillance, containerization and logistics-...'

This happens over and over and over again- straining the readers patience, not unlike certain forms of 'water-torture'...

Then there is the small matter of mentioning, or referring to, subjects of seemingly great import to the main thrust of the book, which are simply not expanded upon. They are just 'dropped in' and then simply left behind. I got the feeling the author was more interested in sounding 'clever' rather than delivering any actual, factual information to his reader. The core facts of this book, (and there are, without doubt, some incredible nuggets of information), remain buried beneath theory and cultural blather- and the reader really has to persist to dig them out- and they really should be widely known!

I almost gave up reading this weighty tome, with its miniscule typeface, but I persisted, because I wanted to know of the disgusting, sinister, anti-democratic and planet destroying future the Pentagon and the corporations are planning for us...I made it to the end, and I do not share the author's conclusions that 'faith in Obama' (lol) or the power of a handful of 'artist-activists' can avert what is plainly a nightmarish, cybernetic 'iron cage' being built for humanity. Only open revolt, and a truly 'Full Spectrum Resistance' has a chance in defeating the future hell now being designed and tested by the lunatics who have taken over the asylum...

5.0 out of 5 stars A censored story that demands to be told., 20 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An incredibly radical, brave and ambitious piece of cinema by the ever-experimental Peter Watkins. True, it is a very long film at around four or so hours, and I just finished watching it in my third or fourth sitting. What can I say? The film stands as a fitting, democratic monument to those courageous citizens of Paris that rose up in the name of equality, dignity, democracy, justice and freedom only to be ruthlessly butchered by the monstrous forces of the middle classes and aristocracy who, being the greedy creatures they are, could not allow any of the aforementioned principles to exist outside of their control, lest they erode their privelages and ill-gotten gains.

In the spirit of the Commune, Watkins uses over 200 non-professional actors to devastating effect, he merges the past and present by letting them speak with their own radically subjective voices, in character and as themselves, relating the events of 1871 to France and the world in 1999, often through the medium of television interviews for a science-fictional 'CommuneTV' channel (thereby allowing a critique of the role of the press of yesterday and today). In practice, Watkins shows the audience that the Commune is alive and well within each and every person that abhors social injustice, or who feels alienated by what passes for 'society' in the western world and beyond, as well as accurately relaying the historical events.

A beautiful, terrifying and compelling piece of film-making, which deserves a wider viewing, not only for the sake of the victims of Thiers's 'Bloody Week', but also because the film is a minor masterpiece of 'living cinema'...

Vive La Commune!

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst films I have ever seen, 14 Feb 2012
While the subject of black soldiers in the US army in the Second World War is deserving and admirable, and although I have no problem with political points being made- This film was slow, cliched, laboured and something of a shambles in terms of character development, plot and pacing. The battle scenes were like something out of a '70s war film, filmed without the sheer speed and energy that one has come to expect in the portrayal of combat (post-'Saving Private Ryan'). Most of the acting is also, I'm sorry to say, mediocre. It's also overly long and the soundtrack grates as it tries, shamefacedly, to milk an emotional response from it's audience. Yet another Spike Lee fail. I often wonder what happened to the talented black director that this chump displaced in his climb to the top... Painful viewing.
