The cover is of a very high quality. Buying the cover to replace my broken cover has extended the life of my iPad. It has done everything that I wanted it to do.

Why I am Not a Muslim
Why I am Not a Muslim

3.0 out of 5 stars A well-argued book, but..., 24 Mar 2014

This review is from: Why I am Not a Muslim (Hardcover)
Ibn Warraq has clearly put a lot of effort into this closely-argued book. Having bought the book, I turned to the section on the Qur'an, which is part of the scripture of my faith, and which I know well. I found many of his points interesting, but as with other books which consider the Qur'an, quality control is not everything it could be. He spotted 5:38 but not 5:39, 5:33 but neither 5:32 nor 5:34, and 9:5 (The verse of the sword) but not 9:6 (The verse of the ploughshare).

This book is easy to read, and is ideal for those people looking for new and provocative ideas, particularly those people who already know something of the subject. It would be a poor choice for anyone, pro-Islam or anti-Islam, who was looking to have their preconceptions supported. It is light years away from the work of Robert Spencer and other such polemicists.

Europe's Tragedy: A History of the Thirty Years War
Europe's Tragedy: A History of the Thirty Years War
by Peter H. Wilson
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Great history of Thirty Years War, 7 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The main strength of this book is that it is complete. All of the nations which took part in the Thirty Years War are covered in some detail. By the time the reader has finished the book, they will have a very good understanding of the issues.

The Thirty Years War covers the period of 'The Three Musketeers', and so you might expect a popular treatment. The book itself starts well - 'Shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday 23 May 1618, Vilem Slavata found himself hanging from a window of the Hradschin Castle in Prague'. This suggests a racy style. In fact it is a very conventional textbook from that point on, with far too few maps.

If you want a well-written textbook on the Thirty Years War, this is a good choice. If you want something faster moving, this would be a poor choice.

Reading the Qur'an

3.0 out of 5 stars A curate's (imam's?) egg, 24 Dec 2013

This review is from: Reading the Qur'an (Hardcover)
This book is good in part, with some sharp and insightful comments. However, it is poorly edited in parts. Some of the chapter & verse references are wrong (e.g. 3:34 rather than 4:34), some of the verses quoted don't support the point being made, and some of the controversial points (for example, that there is no conflict between science and religion) are not well argued, and remain unconvincing.

My vote is 3/5, which is the average of the range between 5/5 and 1/5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, even though it isn't the Iliad, 20 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film isn't the Iliad. It's a Hollywood version of the later retelling, with Achilles being shot in the ankle, etc, and no Greek gods making an appearance. This is a good thing - otherwise the cinemas would have been empty, except for two classics students in the back row. While not a classic like Lawrence of Arabia or Ghandi, I enjoyed it and so did my mother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard going but worth it, 15 May 2013

This book is one in a series of history books. It is, if anything, harder going in the first chapter than other books in the series. But it is a very interesting period of history, the birth of the USA, and perseverance is rewarded.

The description of the movie sounds good. But a small number of decent scenes apart, it is wall-to-wall cliche. The supposedly climatic battle scene was done better in the film 'The Mummy'.

I bought the hardback version. Reading the text requires some effort (it's poetry using old fashioned English), but the effort is worthwhile. The hardback version includes beautiful woodcut prints, but no notes about the text, other than introductions at the start of every chapter.

If you like the King James Bible, you may enjoy this book.

This is an odd film. Part of it is aimed at children, with cute robots, no bad language, etc. But some of the imagery is very dark, and aimed more at adults.

4.0 out of 5 stars It mostly works well, 8 Mar 2013

8th March 2013

I bought Windows 8 because I needed Windows 7 or Windows 8 for Office 2013. I chose Windows 8 because it was substantially less expensive than Windows 7, even though I ammuch more used to Windows 7.

I installed Windows 8 on my computer, which as I bought it had Windows Vista - so it's not an up-to-date computer. Windows 8 works well, a cross between Windows 7 and an iPad. The Windows key brings up the start screen in Windows 8, as it brings up the start menu in earlier versions of Windows. The desktop is an application like any other, and is what things like Office runs on.

There are some things that don't work quite so well.'Send to email' doesn't work because the desktop is separate to the email. Also one fairly old game doesn't work despite using the 'compatibility mode'.

On the whole, I got what I was after.

9th March 2013 Update

I'm finding that I'm spending all my time on the desktop. I found that the built-in email tool has too many bugs - it was replaced by the free Windows Live email tool, downloaded from Microsoft's web-site. Also, I added a start button, again a free download.
