5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 22 Aug 2013

This review is from: The Spectator (Kindle Edition)
I have been a reader of the printed version of the magazine for several years. Due to the passage of time I found it increasingly difficult to read. When I saw that I could get the magazine on Kindle I immediately down loaded it. So now I can enlarge the font and read in comfort . Moreover, Kindle automatically saves the back numbers.

This review is from: On the Sublime (Kindle Edition)
Longinus wrote 'On the Sublime' in classical antiquity. The Kindle version includes some separate academic agonising. The original work is worthy of much close reading. The attached essay seems more concerned with did Longinus really exist, or was it two other fellows Such an approach would dilute what I consider the strength of the work. It does not matter who actually wrote it. The substance of the classical work, really does.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where was the Editor?, 14 May 2013

This work was reduced almost to a farce by thenumber of errors. The title page is in a form of alpha- numerics. The spelling and punctuation are erratic. Cobbett's powerful English is damaged. I awarded this edition with one star only because it is necessary to give the star rating inorder to give one's comments. Kindle, you have let yourself down

5.0 out of 5 stars EYEWITNESS, 7 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Rural Rides (Kindle Edition)
The problem I had in writing this review, was to decide which category it should be reviewed under
I finally decided it was a guide, not primarily a travel guide, as the title suggests, but a guide to a period in English History.
It could be sub titled "The Impact of the Industrial Revolution on Rural England"
Cobbett writes on this topic both passionately and powerfully. It is to this subtitle thatr I have rated it as 5 Star.

Kipling was a prolific writer and to read his works in book form would require a great deal of shelf room and of course, much greater expense. The illustrations are rather a let down, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU DAILY DEAL, 20 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Findings (Kindle Edition)
I bought 'Findings' just because the description looked interesting and as it was A Daily Deal',no problem if I did not like it.
What I received was not a book of poetry, but a collection of several essays. Any way, I decided to start reading it. Soon I realised the intensity of observation of the writer not to mention the many ways she viewed the subject she was writing about.
Surely these essays would provide the inspiration for many poems. (Perhaps they already have) What an insight into the workings of thew mind of the author.
It certainly pays to keep an eye on 'The Daily Deal'

4.0 out of 5 stars Social History, 26 Oct 2012

I have heard criticisms that the book does not deal adequately with contributions from other countries, who assisted in cracking the enigma codes, especially Poland. The title makes it clear that
it deals specifically with Bletchley Park and the people who worked there. In my opinion it paints a very clear picture of how the teams worked in an unnatural environment. Not only that, but it clearly depicts the war time attitudes

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost delighted, 18 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very pleased with it. The operating instructions are not as easy to download as indicated in the manual, that was probably due to my incompetence; I will persevere
One of the first downloads I obtained were the Essays of Montaigne. The Penguin book translated by Screech was ready to fall apart. I downloaded the Essays and it cost me 49p. The translation was idiosyncratic and in places hilarious. I have since downloaded the Screech edition, for rather more than 40p it is excellent on Kindle and so easy to read.
One great advantage for me with the Kindle, is the ease with which the font size can be varied.
