Kokoschka and Alma Mahler (Pegasus Series)
Kokoschka and Alma Mahler (Pegasus Series)
by Alfred Weidinger
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars A lifelong passion - for him, 1 Feb. 2012
I knew that Alma Mahler simply wiped the floor with the hearts of men (listen to Tom Lehrer's great and funny song "Alma"!) but her relationship with painter Oskar Kokoshka has escaped me until now.
Shortly after Mahler's death Alma met Kokoshka, some years her junior, and they engaged in a passionate relationship that was the talk of the town.
But Oskar was not just enfatuated, he was obsessed with Alma and wanted to monopolize her entirely, and Alma, having had enough of a dominant and restricting husband in Mahler, broke off the relationship after 3 years - and an abortion.
As Alma went on to the next man, Oskar in his grief had a lifesize puppet (!) looking like Alma made to comfort him and even made a painting showing himself with the puppet. He never really recovered, but he made some great paintings!

Impressionist Quartet: The Intimate Genius of Manet and Morisot, Degas and Cassatt
Impressionist Quartet: The Intimate Genius of Manet and Morisot, Degas and Cassatt
by Jeffrey Meyers
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing to read. Great book!, 1 Feb. 2012
I have read Jeffrey Meyer's biography on Modigliani and was impressed by the way Meyers has studied the subject. Since I love both Manet and Degas I wanted to learn more about their relationships with their female painter friends, Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, and I have thoroughly enjoyed this book.
