Just as good as ever..., 28 Mar 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have been using the earlier model, the Tefal ActiFry AL800040 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White
, for several years now with none of the troubles which have plagued some other users. I am spending much time away from home and needed a air fryer for my other house and was very happy to continue using the Actifry.
There are few significant differences between this model and the earlier one and annoyingly the timer problem listed below has not been addressed. The main differences are cosmetic ones and in the design of the viewing window which is smaller in this new version.
Anyway, here goes.
Are the chips as good as those from the Chip Shop - No.
Are the chips as good as those made at home in a deep fryer - No
Are the chips as good as oven chips - Yes, better by far.
I weighed a Kilo of raw spuds and chopped them to determine what quantity it would make - enough for two good sized portions or three/four small side dish sized portions. The chips are crispy and firm but soft inside, not quite as crispy as deep fried but then this is offset by the fact that these are far less unhealthy and so the guilt factor is absent.
I have also tried following and adapting some of the recipes in the included cookbook. Chips cooked in paprika or other coatings really are quite delicious and have a lovely crispy texture. It is possible to cook many other dishes in this device but basically the bulk of sales will be to chip lovers like me.
Pro's - Produces very acceptable chips
- Cooks with a very low amount of fat
- No cooking smells
- Safe as no large amounts of hot fat used
- Can be safely and cleanly used away from the kitchen
- Very easy to clean after use
Cons - Fairly noisy - about the same as a hairdryer.
- The timer alarm is useless as it can barely be heard more than six feet from the device
- No way of changing the heat setting
- The timer does not turn off the device, it has to be turned off by hand
- With an average 40 minute cooking time probably not that cheap to run
They could radically improve this unit by fitting it with a new timer that can shut down the cooking process and which has a much louder alarm buzzer. A variable heat setting and a perhaps a keep warm feature designed to work with the timer would be a bonus. Some of these ideas have indeed been implemented in the larger 1.5Kg version of the product but for some reason not incorporated into the standard model.
That aside,at the end of the day if you want healthy and enjoyable chips then despite all the problems with it the Tefal Actifry is the only way to go.
