4.0 out of 5 stars Celebrate with This Album, 25 Oct. 2013
This review is from: Celebrate (Audio CD)
My favourite album of theirs and certainly their best effort with Eumir Deodato.

The three singles are the first three tracks, the lead needs no introduction and was the best selling single in the US in 1980.

'Morning Star' is what by this stage of their careers was a rare instrumental. The syncopation of the brass and the high pitched synth gives it a glorious sparkle, what a delight.

'Side B' has two uptempo and two ballads, my favourite is 'Love Affair' with its wonderful keyboard riff backed up by tender and complementary strings which surge so gently

2.0 out of 5 stars Formulaic, but Vocally Strong, 25 Oct. 2013
This review is from: Whitney (Audio CD)
I bought this album when it came out and time has not changed my mind. I should have guessed really what to expect with a second eponymously titled album out of two, and so it proved. So what do you get, well for me Whitney's singing is fine and it's a bit more raunchy than the first album. Having said that there is a lot of 'formula' here and Narada Michael Waldon's production is so over the top and verges on crass. Waldon got it right with other material around this time (George Benson, Jermaine Stewart), but here the vocals and the accompaniment don't seem to complement, with the latter distracting or simply obscuring the former.

I Wanna Dance with Somebody. Great singing but the production acts like a bulldozer in the chorus and is getting dated even by 1987. Just the Lonely Talking Again. Cannot fault the vocals but what is that trippy meandering synth at the start? Uggh. The ballads are largely reruns from the first album, and how little do they seem to understand the Lloyd Webber/Rice ending song.

Perhaps Whitney's rebellion against her squeaky clean image and lifestyle is in hindsight no surprising given what is on offer here. But 7 million plus sales can't be wrong can they?

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for what they are, 15 Oct. 2013

These do a good job of the front teeth but you have to get the right size and may need to have different sizes for different gaps.

They last reasonably well, longer than non wired versions but the handle, although giving a good grip, makes it awkward to do rear teeth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for getting to the back teeth, 15 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having relatively small handle, I found this relatively easy to use. The brushes being large perhaps last a little longer than their smaller brothering, but one or two uses is the most you will get so 20 brushes is about a months worth I'd say.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Replacement for MX3200 Mouse, 15 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I needed a replacement for my MX3200 mouse and looked a a wired alternative as I did not want two receivers.

This mouse is very similar in shape and operation to my old mouse, the only main difference is the wheel which does not click as you move it, this allows fast scrolling. It takes a little getting used to but works just fine.

So a good mouse then, especially if you are used to the MX3200 mouse or similar with the curved edges aiding comfort and usability.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Most Balanced - But Bonuses are a Bonus, 17 Aug. 2013

Perhaps because the group were breaking up, and the album's relative shortness, I've never been overly passionate on this one. Is It Alright, Endless Lies and Send It were my favourites but now hearing the bonus tracks and having the B Sides it seems a better album was available, which we now have. Certainly the alternative versions of Heaven Only Knows (with Opening), So Serious and In for the Kill (Caught in a Trap relyriced) are an improvement for me.

Balance of Power still managed top ten mind and despite Jeff being 'fed up' the goodies speak for themselves.

Recorded in the Netherlands ELO evolve again with less strings and for that matter less Kelly Groucutt (only on four tracks before leaving for good).

I enjoyed this album, especially Take Me On and On (great guitar Jeff), Four Little Diamonds, Stranger (great guitar again Jeff) and Train of Gold.

The bonus tracks definitely add. I hope one day we will see the full double album, of those missing tracks Hello My Old Friend is a classic worthy of any ELO album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Timeless, 17 Aug. 2013
This review is from: Time (Audio CD)
What a cracking album this is. ELO were on the commercial wane by this time but after the relative flop of Xanadu Jeff seemed to decide to get move away from his musical love affair with America and become much more European - well German at least.

Using a different string arranger and the trusted excellence of Mack and Musicland Studios we have a slant on the Eldorado album theme with someone getting away from the real world but instead of fables and folklore we get technology and time travel.

Highlight for me are Ticket to the Moon, The Rain is Falling, From the End of the World, 21st Century Man and Hold on Tight but there are many other highlights. The only criticism have is perhaps some of the uptempo tracks have the same basic rhythm but its a minor quibble really.

Yes it contained the last commercially big single ELO had, but it was a brave decision to change the style and go with some Moroder influenced magic and it works extremely well.
