Dismal writing and predictable plot, 30 May 2013
Don't get me wrong, I love a good bit of chick lit as much as the next person. Breaking Even, however, is just badly written and full of cliches.
The characters never just 'say' anything, they 'wince' or 'grimace'. They are one dinensional and lacking in depth, which *spoiler alert* makes the ending change of heart quite implausible. The context setting is minimal, instead we are repeatedly treated to rambling descriptions of the handsomeness of Scott, who's motivations are glossed over superficially.
It's a quick, uncomplicated read, but not a memorable one. Despite most of the characters being at least 30, it had a very teenage/moralistic feel, and I felt like an outsider looking in to a situation but never understanding what was really going on in the characters' heads.
