1.0 out of 5 stars Now useless, 12 July 2014
I bought the 25 and loaded up the software and it worked great with my Ableton DAW and various plug-ins except (big note, the use of the drum pads was completely undocumented and I was unable to figure out how they were to be used). Unfortunately my hard disk crashed and I had to buy a new laptop and reload the software. The new Automap version I uploaded (as per recommendation) insisted that I needed to update the Novation Nocturn firmware and it gave a button to click. A message saying "do not turn off your computer" or similar was displayed so I left it for half an hour then an hour then overnight. Nothing. I have had several fruitless email conversations with the Novation technical support and followed their "advice" but now I have a non-working unit which I paid 120 for. I am reasonably tech savvy and have my own small studio so I know my way around most studio stuff. This unit should work without all the "contact the technical department" guff. I will NOT be buying Novation kit in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good hardware, annoying drivers, 12 July 2014
I run on Windows 7 which is fairly popular. The sound quality of the unit is unimpeachable but I need to reboot my PC every time I want to use this unit so the software communicates with the operating system. In fact if I haven't switched on my active monitors before rebooting then the drivers don't seem to kick in then either. You can always tell when a manufacturer is having problems because the euphemistic "contact us" link just steers away from actual contact to some "tell us about your problems" page which limits the respondent to a few number of categories which always just manage not to have anything to do with your particular problem. The nearest I have got to a "solution" is to remove all USB connections and dance in the public highway with a smile on my face and a feather up my ass. This stuff should WORK first time. Never mind contacting the technical department (have they caught Novation disease? please don't get me started on that!) I am trying to make some MUSIC not solve other peoples' problems

A Taste of the West Country
A Taste of the West Country
by Theodora FitzGibbon
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars nearly this book, 11 Jun 2014
I have owned and loved Theodora Fitzgibbon's Traditional West Country Cookery for a long time. Some time ago I could find no trace of review and feared that it had vanished without trace. I am genuinely relieved it has not. It is straight forward and honest. It predates many of the more famous names of today but is absolutely authentic and has a wonderful narrative style. I may well invest in this book as my Fontana paperback (1982) of the aforementioned book I own has been yellowing and showing signs of age for some time. It is simply my favourite cook book. I will write a review once this book is in my grasp (and used a bit).

5.0 out of 5 stars pretty good, 1 Jun 2014
I have't heard this but I am sure it is wonderful. I hate his other records. I went to see the Magic Band in Leeds a few days ago and they were really good

5.0 out of 5 stars not chopsticks, 1 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had a bad relationship with some chopsticks recently (appeal pending) but this is a wonderful example of how chopsticks and other people can get on. Seriously though you don't even need to be eating noodles to appreciate this brilliant recording

2.0 out of 5 stars brilliant chopsticks, not good lovers, 1 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had a good thing going with a pair of these chopsticks but when the lights went out GOOD GOD I was attacked from a very unpleasant direction let me tell you without warning. These fellas don't hold back. They just don't care - broccoli. PRAWNS for heaven's sake and other vegetables too, I don't think I shall look a mango quite the same again, and I love mangoes. Take care, some are just weird. As lovers one star, as extra aliens maybe two

5.0 out of 5 stars never heard elbow before this, 1 Jun 2014
I'm not going to rush out and buy all their albums but I was blown away by this. It is not my usual fare but this is just quality. Also and for me important is Guy Garvey's vocals which are as well as being beautifully sung are in his natural dialect. We all have dialects so let's enjoy them please. Back to the album: there are not many (count them on the fingers of of one hand) which manage to combine such honesty with appropriate musicality. I suppose I would compare them (badly) in those terms with Radiohead. Please don't get on my case about different genres, that isn't what I'm on about. More about emotional honesty maybe also Pink Floyd

4.0 out of 5 stars A good review of the master, 27 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 8 Classic Albums (Audio CD)
The earliest couple of albums on this collection are not Roland Kirk's best but are interesting in that they chart his musical development from bebop workman to the slightly shambolic and wonderful genius he became. The turning point in this journey is surely the album with Charlie Mingus, another singular, wonderful jazz voice and I think CM had a big influence on Kirk's development not only musically but in terms of his confidence and presentation. Of course I may be completely wrong (!) but after that album it seems RK's confidence in his own abilities starts to match his prodigious musical talent. To add a personal note, I was privileged to see Roland Kirk in (I think) 1969 at a tatty theatre in Southsea when I was a student. There were no more that about a dozen or so of us in a not very inviting sonic space but Roland Kirk and the band played a complete set to what was virtually an empty house. Huge professionalism, and huge love to his spirit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed, 27 Dec 2013
This review is from: Lost In A Dream (Audio CD)
The playing is of a high level but...
First the tracks all sound the same, all at a rather lethargic pace. If you played me one track from the album then I would not, even listening to it a hundred times, be able to tell it from its fellows
Second, the drums may as well not be there. It sounds like a mike set up problem. This is an album of duets between the pianist and saxophonist and rather boring at that.
Third this music may be OK as an accompaniment to digesting a good meal but it certainly does not set my world on fire and nor from the audience feedback does it theirs.

In summary would I buy this had I heard it first. No.
