5.0 out of 5 stars A PROJECTIONIST VIEW WHO WAS THERE., 23 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
To put this aspect ratio into perspective I offer the following

I was a Projectionist showing this film at the ABC Cinemas In Dewsbury UK & it was shown in WideScreen
as all films after THE COMMAND with Guy Madison (First Warner CinemaScope film)to be shown on the ABC circuit.
All NON SCOPE films were shown in a ratio of 1,66 to 1.85,depending on what screen you visited.

The aspect ratio being dictated by the size of the proscenium.Plates were cut out to fit the screen,
though not done to exact measurements,as any Projectionist will tell you. The plates were cut to match the screen and masking installed.
So the aspect ratio varied from screen to screen.

When Curse Of Frankenstein came out all the ABC Cinemas in the UK had been converted for WideScreen.
I used to do relief work at various throughout the country and all showed Curse in WideScreen.

CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN was shown in WIDESCREEN.Whether that was the intention originally before it was filmed, well that's another story.

The 5 Stars are for the Film not the dodgy transfer to Blu-ray.

Hope this helps.

Ugetsu Monogatari [Masters of Cinema] (Dual Format Edition) [Blu-ray] [1953]
Dvd ~ Kenji MIZOGUCHI

5.0 out of 5 stars NICE QUALITY ON BLU-RAY, 16 May 2012
This is a classic,

Masters of Cinema Blu-ray - April 2012: Not much to address - we get a Mizoguchi classic in hi-def courtesy of MoC! The improved resolution is a significant improvement in-motion - the image is brighter, more detailed via the layered contrast - it shows a shade more information in the frame. Audio gets the HD-bump and ratchets up a notch closer to purity. Optional subtitles are at MoC's usual high standard.

On the supplements they have included Mizoguchi's Oyu-sama in 1080P plus the Rayns discussions on both films. There is also the included booklet. The Dual-format package also contains a DVD of the feature.

This film always floors me - and it have it in such a wonderful Blu-ray package makes it a true keepsake for the digital library. I rate this 'Essential'.

This is the same film as D'Artagnan's Daughter.
A name change for some reason.

Though an excellent film under any name.

4.0 out of 5 stars FROM ARGENTINA, 1 Mar 2012
This review is from: Cano Dorado (2008) (DVD) (DVD)
aka THE GOLDEN GUN

directed by Eduardo Pinto
Argentina 2008

Panceta (Lautaro Delgado) is a young pipe-cutter who smuggles the scrap pieces of pipe to his garage workshop where he constructs make-shift guns that he sells to small-time kingpin Tacom (Juan Jose Ortiz). When meeting up with Tacom for an exchance at a benefit given by Don Fermin (Sergio Ferreiro) for a boy who lost an eye to a bullet, Panceta is far more interested in Don Fermin's granddaughter Clara (Camila Cruz) and talks her into going along with him on his weekend fishing trip. When Don Fermin cannot locate Clara the next day, Tacom - who has been sleeping with her on the side - suspects that she is with Panceta, and - under the guise of his concern with Don Fermin - alerts the authorities since Clara is a minor. Panceta is adamant that his mother (Tina Serrano) remain ignorant of his work (he tells her that he builds shelves in his workshop); but when he learns that Tacom has used the authorities to intimidate her and exposed his secret, Panceta sends Clara home and goes after Tacom with one of his own makeshift guns.

Although publicity materials want to make the film look like a badass action thriller, CANO DORADO is a more of a character drama. Panceta is given to the occasional violent fantasy, but he's a small-time hood who is more concerned that his mother does not find out about his work than getting caught (when Clara calls him an "arms dealer" he seems to deny it not so much out of any guilt or fear as much as he seems to think she's exaggerating what he really does). Tacom and his partner Melli (Alfredo Bertazzoni) intimidate the locals and run weapons, but their big get-rich plan is to partner with Don Fermin to get a piece of the action from his restaurant after seeing how much money the charity benefit raked in. Tacom is a paranoid drug addict and a sniveling coward when a weapon is pointed in his face, and Melli (at the end) seems at a loss when he cannot find Tacom. The slatternly Clara is one of the few characters who really grows by the end of the film. While actress Cruz is bewitching, the acting honors go to Delgado, Ferreiro, Serrano, and Luis Campos as Panceta's father's friend Polaco. Nods also to Daniel Ortega's gorgeous cinematography - shooting with the Red One rival Silicon S12K camera - of the muddy rivers and idyllic forests, and - in conjunction with editor Mariano Dawidson - one particularly marvelous scene transition.
Comments

Mastered in 2K, the heavily recolored digital image adapts nicely to SD DVD at 2.44.1 (no complaints about the 5.1 track either). The optional English subtitles, on the other hand, may be eye-straining on smaller monitors however. The closing credits are either cropped or opened up to 1.78:1. A trailer (and trailers for other Isis releases) is the only extra.

4.0 out of 5 stars ROUNDHEADS AHOY, 4 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Scarlet Blade [DVD] (DVD)
This 1964 Hammer production stars Lionel Jeffries, as Colonel Judd, and Oliver Reed, as Captain Sylvester.

They play two of Oliver Cromwell's Roundheads during the English Civil War. Sylvester wants the Colonel's royalist daughter, Claire (June Thorburn), so he risks his neck to help her and her royalist pals, who include Jack Hedley's,as the Scarlet Blade.

Unfortunately, after a couple of hours in his company, Claire falls helplessly in love with the Blade.

Sylvester's upset to say the least.

Oliver Reed's charisma here is undeniable.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT VIETNAM MOVIE, 20 Dec 2011
I have to agree with Brett B. ClarK,one of the stars of the movie.

I enjoyed it,its on par with Joe Solomon's THE LOOSER which is a minor classic.
If you approach this with the right attitude, its a fun picture.
Directed by the late Cirio H. Santiago,a very good Director, who worked on this and about 100 plus films,
some in partnership with Roger Corman.

It also as 2 sequels, also check out NAMS ANGELS.

This is a nice print 1.33 Ratio as it was originally shot.

Recommended for those with intelligence.

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT THOR FROM THE ASYLUM, 18 Oct 2011
This review is from: Almighty Thor [DVD] (DVD)
Well I liked this version a lot, very Entertaining.
Knocking this type of movie is counter productive to the genre
Its just a fun movie. Its not meant to be a masterpiece

Cody Deal did a good job as Thor.
With Patricia Velasquez Kevin Nash and Richard Grieco
Production values are first rate.

Shot in Wide Screen 2.35.1 The picture quality is impressive.

While no where near as good as THOR The Big Budget Version
which cost rather a lot more than this .
never the less this is Great in the tradition of The Asylum Sci-Fi films.

This is available in Germany in English & German on Bluray.
Highly Recommended.
