5.0 out of 5 stars PEGGY LEE WAS WONDERFUL & A GREAT BUY SUCH AS THIS CONFIRMS HER STANDING!, 29 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Miss Lee was known for "Mr. Wonderful" and a whole host of other popular song classics, and she was a wonderful artist as this great compilation of numerous of her long-length albums makes evident. Peggy had a wonderfully restrained and minimalist style accompanied by great sensitivity which always makes her a joy and especially soothing to listen to - in modern terms she can act as a powerful relaxer. Besides Miss Lee's undeniable gifts, this "great buy" is a treasure trove of some of her best recordings ever and Miss Lee consistently made good records which must be also due to the companies she worked for - Decca and Capitol in the USA. These businesses seemed to have really appreciated her and the outcome is discernible in the 8 albums provided here for your audible delight. To pick highlights is futile as practically every track is a highlight. Do buy and savour this wonderful musical box set! You won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Also Beautiful but Disappointing!, 11 Nov 2013

This review is from: Woman to Woman (Audio CD)
I use the word "also" because I found the same experience with George Michael's "Patience" CD recently. Both are English and wonderful vocalists but these 2 albums proved disappointing for me. Both CDs are very different - G. ML's CD is modern while Miss Laine's CD is timeless - but both despite many moments of beauty proved ultimately disappointing to me. They both lacked that special magic that is required to make an album a treasure to behold! Cleo's CD has an interesting concept in that she is covering songs written solely by women - hence, the title "Woman to Woman", but the concept is more intriguing than the finished artwork. Miss Laine's covers of other female's creations - including Judy Collins's "Since You've Asked", Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now", Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow", etc. - are lovely but the sum total does not add up. Earlier albums such as - "Feel the Warm", "Best Friends", "Wordsongs", etc. - stand head and shoulders above this 1989 offering. Still, despite my reservations it is good, possesses Miss Laine's remarkable voice and may appeal to others.

"Patience" by George Michael is an unusual mixed bag of virtues and vices. This English all-around talent (singer, composer, musician, producer, etc.) is a major figure in the Music World and justifiably so. Despite his many skills, George Michael's singing gifts most forcefully impress me and this male must have 1 of the finest voices ever in the Popular realm. On this CD his stunning vocals are to the fore and beautifully mixed. The arrangements, sampling of other recordings and intriguing sound effects are flawless. My favourite tracks are - "Patience". "Patience Pt 11" (an especially handsome instrumental), "Amazing" & the vivacious "Flawless (Go to the City)" ! However, despite the many virtues outlined, this album is over-long and the huge amount of work and time that went into its creation, probably explains why it seems dull and disappointing ultimately. Any sense of spontaneity is missing and for me it becomes a chore to listen to it from start to conclusion. When a CD becomes a chore you realise that there is something basically missing. Other shorter, simpler and less-contrived albums by George Michael far surpass "Patience" !

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT HER BEST BUT STILL A GOOD & RARE DVD!, 31 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is titled Peggy Lee "Singing at her Best" but that is misleading as this is a mediocre DVD! Miss Lee has so done so much more than this suggests as she was/is one of America's great popular performers of the 20th Century who easily occupies her throne amongst other greats such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. In my opinion, this classy lady's restrained approach put her shoulders above all of them. Possessed of magic she hypnotises the listener! And her choice of material is always 1st rate. Peggy always delivers. "Fever - the Magic of Peggy Lee" is a far superior DVD but as there is so few of her videos available this good and rare DVD is prized - but that is based on the dearth of her DVDs - rather than quality. Despite the deficiencies it is still great to have this DVD. All of the tracks are worthwhile but my favourites are - "From This Moment On" (Lee known for her minimalist approach is surprisingly lively and vivacious here), "I Love Being Here With You" (such a clever lyric and by Peggy herself), the "Cross Country Suite" (always 1st class) and the set of songs with Petula Clarke are a delight - a humorous version of "I'm A Woman", and particularly atmospheric and contemplative is "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". Besides humour, Lee could do the profound and here in the company of the English singer Lee conveys much meaning. This DVD spans her early to her middle years.

4.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT INSIGHT INTO DIANA ROSS's 1980's RCA YRS.!, 22 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Miss Ross left her home label of Motown for RCA in the 1980's and stayed with her new employers, before re-signing to Motown for a 2nd time! It was a significant departure on her part, and many see her defection to RCA as being commercially-driven, while she has always maintained that it was essential to her development, both as a person and an artist to make such a radical move. Who knows for certain but it strikes me that her tenure with RCA produced some fine performances from her as this deserving compilation proves. As other reviewers have noted this CD not only contains stunning photos of the performer but many tracks that are unavailable elsewhere, and for the latter I would advise you to purchase this RCA compilation. No selection from any prolific artist can contain everything, so it will always be a matter of compromise - for the most part, RCA have done the best they could in their selection of Ross's recordings with them. Favourites of mine include "Summertime" (haunting, gentle and partially written by Leonard Cohen), "Love or Loneliness" (with a West Coast US laid-back feel), "Tell Me Again" (with a sense of drama that Ross has made her own), "Let's Go Up" (which is so suited to her), "It's Hard For Me To Say", "Cross My Heart" and "Endless Love" - the last 3 being ballads, possibly being the genre in which Ross triumphs. Miss Ross has always had a gentle and tender feel to her being which is apparent in her ballad recordings and it is a gift of hers that should not be overlooked. A nice album and one that is worth adding to most people's collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY TASTEFUL CD SINGLE OF ORIGINALS & REMIXES, 22 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: I Will Survive (Audio CD)
This Cd single by Diana Ross is centered around her version of a disco classic normally associated with another celebrated black singer Gloria Gaynor. The song is of course Gaynor's trademark "I Will Survive" and justifiably it will be always linked to her. However, this does not exclude Miss Ross, who re-interpreted this song in her own vital and sensitive manner, ably assisted by an exciting new dance arrangement. This song 1st appeared on Ross's mid 1990's album "Take Me Higher" - 1 of her best all-time recordings. For this particular single, the track already referred to appears plus 3 others, which consist of 2 very good remixes of "I Will Surive" and a song entitled "Voice Of The Heart", which seems tailored-made for our star. I highly recommend this single to all - both fans and general lovers of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT MUSICAL FILM!, 10 Oct 2013

Most are familiar with "South Pacific", "The Sound of Music" and "Les Miserables", etc. Why has this wonderful film "With A Song In My Heart" been neglected by contemporary audiences? It makes no sense to me. The plot is arresting and the songs based on Jane Froman's magnificent alto should soften the hardest hearts. Combined with that the red-haired beauty and powerful Susan Hayward triumphs in the leading role. For once the bonus features are a treat. Not to be over-looked!

Judy Collins is a huge talent - songwriter, interpreter of other's songs, musician (both guitar and piano) and a superb singer. Knowing that Collins could have made it solely on her vocal abilities makes her so special. Extraordinarily, that voice has only blossomed with age. Legend goes that she encouraged Leonard Cohen to perform while he wisely directed her to start writing for herself. This Cd is a revised look at all her own written songs and in this stripped back musical background Collins reaches the skies.

The Complete Guide to the Music of the "Beatles"
The Complete Guide to the Music of the "Beatles"

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Accessible Book on the Beatles!, 10 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I would recommend this book to everyone - from a Beatles fan to any music lover. It is excellent as it solely concentrates on the recording output of the British "Fab Four" ! In doing so, this series by Omnibus Press (and I possess their book on the Carpenters), eschews all biographical data and places the emphasis where it should be - on the Music! The album-by- album and track-by-track approach makes for engrossing reading. Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Tasteful Compitlation!, 10 Oct 2013

I have some knowledge of Monro and this is my 1st purchase of of his Cds. It shows him in a good light but I suspect that Monro recorded other gems that are not included here but that is not to criticise Music for Pleasure who did a fine selection. Also, the essay within and the George Martin link to Mr. Monro are interesting. Well-Recommended.
