5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great bit of kit, 13 Mar. 2015

This is a great bit of kit. It took less than ten minutes to set up Wi-Fi, two email accounts, a FB account, have a quick look at the BBC news and check out an item on eBay. The cameras are low def (0,3mp?) but that's good enough for posting photos on social media. (If you want portraits, load up your film camera and set the lens to f2,8.) The office apps look OK and BBC iPlayer is fine. I won't be using this tablet for movies (Netflix etc) so I can't comment but the display specs look OK. The main point of all this is that if I'd paid £230 for for this tablet I still would have given it 4 stars. At this price, it can't be beaten. I've rated the seller elsewhere with 5 stars too. Brilliant!

Not much to say except if you're a Quo fan, just get it. Excellent! (Can't believe how good Rossi's voice is. No evidence of autotune either.)

Great action movie that received undeserved criticisms. OK, yes, you can see its provenance but still very entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're an Asimov geek (just like me) then this is for you, 23 Feb. 2015

When Asimov began writing his robot and Foundation convergence novels in the '80s, I produced a very basic timeline for myself. If you're an Asimov geek (just like me) then this is for you. OK, so there are a few typos but this book is packed with good information about Asimov's 'ficti-verse' and publications to the point that I've discovered books that I've never read before. Great stuff!

This review is from: The Iron Dream (Kindle Edition)
The Iron Dream is one of a kind. It is a mixture of comedy and farce with generous amounts of black humor thrown into the mix. I first read it back in the mid 70s not long after it was published and I never forgot it. I have re-read it many times since. To put it another way, it's one of those books that will stay with me forever. It's possible that Spinrad miscalculated slightly - if the reader is not well read in 'real' 20th century European history then the characters will seem one dimensional and a bit pallid. However, if the reader is familiar with the Treaty of Versailles, the Putsch of 1923, the Weimar Republic, Hitler's election to Chancellor in 1933 etc, then the irony and black humor jumps out of every page. In sum, a masterpiece..

This is a minor masterpiece. The short stories in this collection were published individually through the 1960s and up to the late 70s and they are as relevant now as when they were first written. Although classed as fantasy, these stories are more in the nature of philosophical tales with a metaphysical theme. The stories deal with order and chaos, human frailty, greed, lust etc but most of all, they demonstrate that man, as a species, does not understand what he is doing. John Brunner seems to have drawn on classical authors for his inspiration including Ovid and Virgil but there are also nods in the direction of Darwin, Nietzsche and possibly even Freud. I have read this book many times and will return to it again. Often I have seen or heard an event on TV or in the street and muttered to myself, 'Yes, the Traveller was right!'

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece, 30 Oct. 2013

This review is from: Infernal Devices (Kindle Edition)
I have read this book many times since it first appeared in the mid 1980s. It's beautifully written and a real page turner. Dower's slightly stuffy and naive first person voice produces remarkable story telling.
If you're into Steampunk (K. W. Jeter invented the term) and Victoriana, just buy it.
(Also, please see my review of Fiendish Schemes, the sequel to Infernal Devices.)

Fiendish Schemes (Infernal Devices)
Fiendish Schemes (Infernal Devices)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not great but close, 30 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've been a fan of Infernal Devices since it was published and that is the main reason I only gave Fiendish Schemes four rather than five stars. The vocabulary and grammar of Dower's first person voice may not appeal to everyone but I thought the writing was beautifully crafted. Americanisms creep in very occasionally ('out the window/door' etc) but that doesn't really detract from how well the book is written. K. W. Jeter has done his homework on Britain and British culture and it shows in the quality of this book. For example, one of the most hated characters of recent British society makes a thinly disguised appearance and almost pops out of the page at the reader.
Anyone new to K. W. Jeter, please be aware - Fiendish Schemes may not work quite so well as a stand-alone book because there are so many references to its predecessor, Infernal Devices. .
This is Steampunk with a Vengeance and I loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 28 July 2013

If you know your late 19th and early 20th century European history then this book demonstrates what many in the UK feared up to the outbreak of war in 1914. It's not quite up there with 'Riddle of the Sands' but still very good.
