5.0 out of 5 stars Best in series, 7 July 2014

The best of the series. This is mainly due to one character (not one of the main players) who's really well written and who has a vital role.

4.0 out of 5 stars What would you do if you were a historian with a time machine?, 25 Sep 2013

Excellent novel, with a few similarities to Connie Willis (Not To Mention The Dog especially). More violence, more sex, still funny in places.

Although I'd rather not have a leather one: if Apple think a plastic cover is good enough for their iPad then why don't Android tablet accessory makers think the same?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent way of powering a Raspberry Pi, 21 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I saw this demonstrated at a Computing at School hub meeting in Manchester as a way of getting a portable Raspberry Pi (no endorsement implied from either of these organisations!).

It's a really good way to allow your Pi to exist in its own little environment (a plastic sandwich box in my case) and with a WiFi dongle and using SSH and VNC to connect to it you get a superb system for remote data logging, or robotics control.

I've only run it for about 2 hours, so I don't have any reliable ideas as to capacity, but I'm sure it will be significantly longer. With the plethora of 'ends' I've used it for my mobile phone, and my partner's iPad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant series, 21 Mar 2013

I'm not sure why I bought this, probably an Amazon recommendation, but it's really good. It's about an organisation (NORBAC) that investigates biological issues. The characters are great, particularly Bob, a biologist with Aspergers. The stories are interesting, and I've learnt a lot about biology through looking at the linked website.

Computers and Intractability: A Guide to the Theory of NP-completeness (Series of Books in the Mathematical Sciences)
Computers and Intractability: A Guide to the Theory of NP-completeness (Series of Books in the Mathematical Sciences)
by M R Garey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £53.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous book, 3 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is THE book to have if you are looking at P v NP problems, and NP completeness. It covers the theory, and then provides a list of a problems that are NP-complete, broken down into sections, with details of how the problem has been proved to be NP-complete, i.e., by giving the transformations needed to transform one problem to the other.

It's out of date (there are lots of other problems that have been proved to be NP-complete since it was written) but it's a invaluable resource and will be in the reference list for any work on the topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can be used as an introduction to programming for anyone, 13 Sep 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've been using Processing (and the systems based on Processing such as Mobile Processing and Arduino) for some time now, and find them a great introduction to programming in general.

This book is beautifully presented and very well written. The introductory chapters are a great way of starting to learn programming and I'm proposing to use the ideas in them as an introduction to programming for my students.

Together with Ben Fry's Visualizing Data these are brilliant way to get people programming (with Processing).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good collection but of previously published works, 12 Sep 2002
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you are looking to complete your collection of Lois McMaster Bujold's Vokosigan novels then you will probably have every word of this book. Basically it's Borders of Infinity, Brothers at Arms and Mirror Dance all in one.
There are extremely good novels, but to parcel them up as one 'new' book, even if it has been personally 'chosen by the author' is very misleading. On the back of the book it says 'Publisher's Note: Miles Errant has been previously published in parts as "Borders of Infinity," Brothers in Arms and Mirror Dance. This is the first chronologically combined edition, as chosen by the author.'
Well, I think it's great value if you are a first time reader but to anyone with those books, and most people will have them who are fans, it's a waste of money. Whether I will get my money back I don't know but I'm going to try!

MMIXware: A RISC Computer for the Third Millennium (Lecture Notes in Computer Science)

5.0 out of 5 stars Find out exactly how a processor should work!, 15 Jan 2001
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book because a) I love Knuth's writing and b) I wanted to implement a processor emulation for my students. I still hold to a) but have become convinced that it is difficult if not impossible for me to do b) properly. Knuth has produced a marvellous book on implementing an assembler/emulator for MMIX the successor to his MIX computer used in The Art of Computer Programming. It's based on a RISC design and the programming is presenting using WEB literate programming. The standard of presentation is, as you'd expect, of the highest, although you could make money, as always, by spotting a mistake and emailing him (I can't believe anyone who gets a cheque from him after spotting a mistake ever cashes it, preferring instead to frame it and hang it on the wall).
Unusually for an emulator details such as timing, interrupts and pipelining are dealt with in detail, so that if you want to find out, for example, how pipeling works in theory then this is the book for you.
