4.0 out of 5 stars No 136bpm Before 2am :-), 24 Mar 2014
First GU set I bought on the strength of Underworld's Jumbo kicking proceedings off - a great disc one/disc two punch of peak time loveliness mixed by a genuine key stone of the dance music scene...

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best, 24 Mar 2014

Bought this about 15 years ago and still listen to it in 2014, Disk 1 gets things off to a steady start but its disk 2 where the rubber really meets the road, it just builds and builds. Awesome - this was the set that inspired me to have a go at this mixing lark. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Come on, Dave, gimme a break..." "One break comin' up!!", 11 Jan 2014
This review is from: Studio Albums 1978-1984 (Audio CD)
The definitive five albums from America's premiere party 'whole greater than the sum of their parts' rock band in one box set. Ferocious on Van Halen & Van Halen 2, Women & Children First & Fair Warning. Bit hit & miss with Diver Down (but great fun nontheless) and back to form, albeit a more shiny polished form, with 1984. Forget anything post 1983, this is a five part time capsule of everything great about late 70's / early 80's American hard rock. And then some. Indispensible.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Music Makes It., 14 July 2013
This review is from: Arbitrage [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
What raises this three star decent drama into the four star pleasant suprise bracket is Cliff Martinez's masterly score which for my money was as important a character as the protagonists.

So began Bob Geldof's notes in the Live Aid program in 1985 - conveying the absolute horror of total famine in the personal story of a dying child - and so it is with McCullin's photography - shocking, moving, and always personal. Having photographed just about every major conflict since the 60's it's about time his personal thoughts and feelings were documented along side the incredible photographs. Cool, calm and collected, McCullin is a likable and straight talking bloke who belies the immense courage and lets be honest, bottle required to take pictures in such circumstances. An essential documentary.

Beautiful, thought provoking documentary regarding Chile's Atacama Desert, 10,000ft above sea level, the driest place on earth which enables telescopes to see to the very edge of our universe, but also provides the conditions for mummification of the bodies of victims of Pinochet which Mothers & loved ones search for in the arrid conditions. Looking downward, looking upward and looking inward in Patricio Guzman's spellbinding, poetic masterpiece.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely ambient noodling from Mr. Martinez, 30 Mar 2013
This review is from: Arbitrage - O.S.T. (Audio CD)
The foremost composer of moody ambient loveliness, Cliff Martinez (Traffic, Solaris, Narc, Drive) delivers another perfectly weighted soundtrack of atmosphere and thoughtful noodling - beautiful, thinking music.

5.0 out of 5 stars The usual quality from Rick Smith / Danny Boyle..., 30 Mar 2013
This review is from: Trance O.S.T. (MP3 Download)
After first collaborating on1996's Trainspotting (Dark Train / Born Slippy Nuxx) then The Beach (8 Ball) Sunshine and Frankenstein Danny Boyle's Trance features a great soundtrack of broody beats and uplifting ambience from one half of Underworld, Rick Smith. Terrific.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful TV movie, 6 Jan 2013
Saw this in a couple of parts on TV in the late 80's. Powerful performances by all concerned - subsequently bought Norman Mailer's Pulitzer Prize winning book. The movie is a pretty faithful portrayal.

Thin Lizzy: Live - In Concert [DVD]

3.0 out of 5 stars It Is As It Was..., 13 Aug 2012
There are a few films of Thin Lizzy in concert. Live & Dangerous being at one end of the scale - blistering, and Thunder & Lightning Tour at the other - awful. This falls somewhere inbetween. It's complete, filmed from a few vantage points and the audio is halfway decent. That the band are rough and pretty ragged is because they were!! After Gary Moore left the band for the second time and before John Sykes joined for a last roll of the dice, Thin Lizzy were all at sea, struggling under the excesses of living the rock n roll lifestyle to the full whilst chucking out an album a year and touring to boot. Anything post Black Rose is below par both material and band wise with moments of greatness, and Phil Lynott never managed to recapture the lightning in a bottle that was 1976/79. But as a snapshot of the Chinatown / Renegade live set-up of the band this is a decent effort and about as good as it got...
