4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, as long as you can get your head around the vocab, 5 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love this - written in a language based on the vocab of Old English but with modern grammar and word order. This means you do have to think a bit, but then that's the point. It's surprising how quickly you can adapt to the linguistic issue and it does serve the purpose of taking the reader into a different world where life and emotions are different - treatment of wives certainly is! However, core human experience is similar. We're used to hearing about 1066 from the winner's side: here we have the oppressed majority speaking up and getting in contact with the old gods and the old ways of England to gather moral strength to fight the Normans. Desperaton, mysticism and what the modern world might call psychosis, paranoia or schzophrenia meet in the central character - an untrustworthy narrator - who goes to fight for his country all too late.

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as the previous basic e-reader, 5 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The bad: The touch screen is OK but not always as responsive as I'm used to from an ipad. The screen seems smaller and not as clear as the old kindle and it's taking a while to work out how to navigate, but then that's how new products are. However, the display seems to be made for a colour screen - trying to shop in the kindle store means looking at greyscale reproductions of book covers which don't really come out well. They're small too, so some of them are illegible. There are also lots of adverts, some of which you can turn off in settings but it feels like it's constantly pushing you to join Amazon Prime or Kindle unlimited. The screen saver is an advert for a book I'd rather not be associated with, which is pretty irritating.I got mine on the first day of release - entirely coincidentally as I'd had my old kindle pinched - so there's only one kind of cover available - the official one - which is £25!! I'm waiting for the £5 one which should be out at the end of the month. The screen only has one orientation - portrait as far as I can see although kids' picture books are displayed landscape but not very well - the text from one page overlapping the facing page.
The good: £59 seems pretty cheap. You keep any previously bought kindle books in the cloud and can read any of them on this kindle - A great system. Touch screen is less clunky than the previous button navigaton and the wifi seems a bit better too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent storage and playmat, 25 July 2014

Excellent storage and playmat. The lid could be a bit more sturdy- it doesn't do well with other things stacked on top, but there's lots of space for a few duplo sets in here

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard work but good, 3 Nov. 2013

Having started out with Davina DVDs, I progressed to these. It's definitely worth it for the money as you get so much choice within one box. It's very American in style with extremely buff young women exercising with Jillian - there for us to aspire to, according to Jillian - and they're clearly catering to a US demographic with one blonde and one African-American as well as Jillian. It's far more sexed-up than an English equivalent but it's also really encouraging and Jillian never stops pushing you to keep going. Indeed, she never stops talking at all, explaining the moves you're doing and keeping you distracted from the hardness of whatever it is you're enduring!
Lots of the moves are easy enough but there are several which (for me at least) are nearly impossible. Considering these DVDs are clearly aimed at people wanting to lose lots of weight, rather than already fit people, some exercises seem out of place. My other complaint is that the warm up and cool down are too short and I need to add my own extra bit to get properly stretched. However, overall, I really enjoy Jillian's style: encouraging and firm, not letting you off too easily. It's clearly tailored to exercise the 'problem areas' and lose weight overall and certainly works up a sweat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to start off losing weight, 3 Nov. 2013

This box set of 2 DVDs is great for those starting out on losing weight. There was nothing too taxing and the instructors make it clear how to exercise and keep safe or which bits to change to make it easier. There are 2 personal trainers, 1 male, 1 female plus Davina grinning and making jokes.
The DVD with 3 30 minute workouts is fine although I find the workouts a bit short now that I've been doing it for a couple of months. There's a general one, a kick-boxing one and core stability (which I've not done much)
The other one, 'Power of three' is a 40 min workout with sections in it you can miss out if you want to. The sections are: warm up, bottom, upper body, abs, cool down.
Both DVDs are organised as interval training so you get a minute of intense exercise to get your heart rate up and burn fat followed by a few exercises to work on specific areas, then another interval. The warm up and cool down sections are particularly good as they are long enough to actually work, something I've not found with my Jillian Michaels DVDs. They are very English and not like the polished, sexed-up US sort, but they work well.
The only complaint I have is that the male instructor often doesn't tell you what you're going to be doing next in the 30 min workouts. However, once you've done it a few times you know what's coming. There is the option on both discs to switch off the talking and just have the music, something you'll be grateful for once you've heard all Davina's jokes a few times! Since I started using these DVDs (plus Jillian Michaels), doing 6 workouts a week and replacing bread, potatoes and pasta with various bean dishes, I've lost a stone and a half in 2 months.
This is so worth it as long as you have the will power to exercise alone consistently.

5.0 out of 5 stars lots of fun bits, hours of fun, 25 Mar. 2013

This review is from: Galt Mega Marble Run (Toy)
This is brilliant fun to build and race marbles down. Younger children need quite a lot of help to understand how to construct it as well as how not to fight over bits or who wins races but when it works it's fantastic. There are loads of different race parts - steps, wheels, a bell, see-through bits, wiggly sections, switch-backs etc as well as a couple of ingenious ways of building towers starting in mid- air. There are 20 marbles included which is brilliant fore-thought, considering how easily they get lost. I think other reviewers have suggested that it's a boy-who-likes-maths kind of toy but I really disagree. I'm a 38 year old girl who was never that good at maths and I love it!! The possibilities for better and more exciting race tracks are brilliant and inspire creativity as well as logical thinking. My 4 year old girl and 3 year old boy love it although they need lots of help to make a track that works rather than a couple of towers that the marble just falls down! I highly recommend this toy.
