2.0 out of 5 stars zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, 21 Dec 2011
I must admit to finding this film a little dull. It follows a group of conspiracy theorists including Alex Jones as they attempt to spread their message and convince the American people that events such as 9/11 were manufactured by the state. The theories that they promote have all been examined in detail by investigative journalists and shown to have no basis in reality so it's a rather sad spectacle watching these fanatics wasting their lives trying to spread misinformation when there is so much real corruption in government and society that does need exposing. The film has been directed in an unbiased fashion allowing the viewer to decide if there is any basis for their protests. Interestingly, the same film makers made Darkon, another well made film whose subject left me rather cold.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative, 20 Dec 2011
An interesting and informative study of the life of William Kunstler, the human rights lawyer and social libertarian, written and presented by his daughters. I had not heard of the man before viewing the film and was genuinely fascinated by this look at his life and the events that motivated his career. To me, it appeared a very balanced and fair portrayal, that was not scared to challenge his motivation. Like many people who live in the public eye, he appeared to some extent to be driven by the need to maintain that celebrity and in later life actually took on cases that would maintain this but in doing so fought many important human rights cases and achieved much to improve the life of the oppressed in the US.

5.0 out of 5 stars High society?, 20 Dec 2011
A fascinating film that documents the life of Pablo Escobar (the head of the Medellin drug cartel in the 1970s and 1980s) and his influence on Colombian politics and society. It was made in collaboration with his son Sebastien who has eschewed the criminal lifestyle his father pursued in favour of a more normal existence in Argentina. The film follows Sebastien as he returns to Colombia for the first time since he escaped following his father's death and his attempts at reconcilliation with the sons of men his father had murdered. Sadly modern day Colombia is still riven by conflict and heavily influenced by the drug trade.

Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jack Rebney uncovered, 14 Dec 2011
I must admit that I didn't find the "Jack Rebney" videos (check out youtube if you don't know what I am talking about) which show him reacting angrily to fairly mundane events particularly amusing but I did enjoy the film. It's a film that is simple in concept: to discover the man behind the epithet "the world's angriest man". It may not be profound, but is is enjoyable and I defy anyone not to be moved at the end and to fail to like Jack Rebney.

3.0 out of 5 stars In the land of make believe..., 14 Dec 2011
A watchable film that documents a period of time when the animation division of Disney was initially in decline but managed through the efforts of a new management team (and of course the animators) to reinvent itself and become highly successful again. I'm not a big fan of recent Disney films and found the subject matter less than animating. Worth a watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not particularly enjoyable to watch..., 14 Dec 2011
Another documentary which you expect to be an uplifting experience but which ends up being just a little depressing. The film looks at the success of the charter schools in harlem which have attempted and succeeded in breaking the cycle of failure of black and asian kids in Harlem and shown that any child, whatever their background, can succeed in the right environment. Unfortunately only a select few (who win the charter schools lottery) gain a place at one of the schools and attempts to expand the progamme are blocked by ignorant self-serving politicians. Plus ca change....

3.0 out of 5 stars A slice of life?, 14 Dec 2011
There is no doubt that this is a well made and thoughtful film documenting the director's return to the rural Southern Illinois of his past to reconnect with Stevie Fielding, a troubled young boy he had been an 'Advocate Big Brother' to ten years earlier. During the film we find out that during that 10 year gap, Stevie has been in trouble with the law on several occasions and is now accused of molesting an eight year old girl. He is a child in a man's body, angry with the world and with good reason. In spite of this, it's a tough film to watch. Stevie does not endear himself to the viewer (neither do his mother or grandmother for that matter) and his actions, whatever the cause, are of course unforgivable. It's disturbing viewing, and although it is at times sad and moving, it's never easy to watch and left me with mixed feelings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is this the worst documentary ever made?, 7 Dec 2011
My title is of course tongue in cheek since this is in fact a well made and intelligently filmed documentary. Having said that I think the main problem with the film is that it's audience is limited to those people who have seen and enjoyed the film Trolls 2 which forms the subject matter of the film. Trolls 2 has been voted the worst film of all time and, having seen the clips included in the documentary, it appears well deserving of the award. The film has spawned a cult audience of fans who find the film "hilarious" and watch it repeatedly in fits of laughter. Personally I haven't seen the film, didn't find the clips remotely amusing and so found little to enjoy in the documentary.

It was made by one of the original cast members and documents the success of the film as it is screened for the first time on the big screen around the country. Cinemas appear to sell out everywhere and cast members are greeted as movie stars as fans "flock" (in fairly small numbers) to see the film. During the film the film maker attempts to find all of the original cast and crew who made the film and brings as up to date with their lives and their memories of the making of the film. Generally the cast has moved on and is able to laugh about the experience but when we meet the director, the writer and two hard to find members of the cast (all of whom clearly have mental health issues) things turn a little darker and a little less comfortable. The director clearly believes that he has made a seminal and important film that he is only now getting the recognition for which it deserves rather than the reality which is that the film's renaissance is purely due to the fact that it's a turkey to beat all turkeys. The director cuts a rather pathetic figure railing against the cast as they hysterically recounted details of the incompetent filming. At the end we discover that he is now planning a sequel!

Clearly if you have enjoyed Trolls 2 and enjoyed it then this is a must see. If you haven't, I would try watching that film and only watch Best/Worst Movie if you enjoy the experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sigh...., 5 Dec 2011
One of those rather depressing documentaries in the vein of those concerning Enron and Walmart that leave you a little numb and despairing. It will probably appeal more to a US audience than a UK one since it deals with the American political system which we in the UK are not usually au fait with. The film deals with the corruption scandal involving Jack Abrimoff (a super-lobbyist) who used his political contacts to swindle millions of dollars away from naive innocents who were attempting to buy political influence. As so often happens the house of cards which Abrimoff had built with many others eventually tumbled to the ground resulting in prison sentences for some of those involved. The Republican party (to which many of those directly involved in the scandal belonged) managed to mitigate the worst of the fallout and many of those involved have escaped without punishment.

Another depressing insight of the murky world of politics and greed which has left the rest of us facing yet another financial crisis.

House - Season 4 - Complete [DVD]
House - Season 4 - Complete [DVD]

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear!, 4 Dec 2011
I've always had a kinda love/hate relationship with House and this is the season where it all went wrong for me. House has always been a little repetitive in story line, person gets ill, they get treated, the person gets worse, they treat him again, the person nearly dies, House gets lightbulbed and the patient walks away. Clearly this storyline is facile on a one-off episode, to have it repeated endlessly is torture. What has always carried the show is both the fantastic performance of Hugh Laurie and the occasional spark of humour (usually involving Hugh Laurie in the clinic). But season 4 just lacked any sort of spark at all. The whole extended job selection process was mind-numbingly stupid and ball-achingly dull to watch. The show managed to then crawl out of the nadir it had fallen into and promptly plunge over a nearby cliff and continue falling presumably well beyond the end of the series. The last few episodes with Wilson, his girlfriend and the bus crash were so bad that I had to saw my own leg off with a plastic knife just to give me something to take away the pain.

Not recommended.
