5.0 out of 5 stars The best history I have read on this conflict, 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Noel Barber's book on the war in Malaya is quite simply a rip-roaring account that is a pleasure to read. This is not a history for people who wish to read endless re-telling of the order of battle of various units, or dry-as-dust political wrangling, instead it gets right to the meat of the conflict - ambushes, arrests, bombings, defections, betrayal - and describes them in an engaging and easy-to-understand way.

This book does, naturally given when it was written, suffer from misplaced nostalgia for the British Empire, and perhaps unnecessarily dwells on the failure of the US to be able to emulate the UK's success in Malaya, but these are very minor failings.

Scorched Earth, Black Snow: The First Year of the Korean War
Scorched Earth, Black Snow: The First Year of the Korean War
by Andrew Salmon
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.08

5.0 out of 5 stars An icy hell, 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book does a great job of recounting the experiences of the British and Australian troops in the first year of the Korean war and is a good companion-piece to Salmon's other book on the British role in the conflict (To The Last Round). I look forward to seeing the author produce a third volume on the fighting during the last two years of the war.

Aden Insurgency: The Savage War in Yemen 1962-67
Aden Insurgency: The Savage War in Yemen 1962-67
by Jonathan Walker
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars A detail history, 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Personally I might have preferred a more lively re-telling of the conflict, particularly the mutiny and the events in Crater, but as a solid factual account Walker's book tells you all that you need to know about this conflict.

Great North Road
Great North Road

Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Realistic sci-fi, 28 Mar. 2014

This review is from: Great North Road (Paperback)
This book should probably have been split up into a series (the paper-back version is more than 1000 pages long), but as a companion for a long-haul flight it was most satisfactory.

Cancionero de Upsala-Spanish Madrigals
Cancionero de Upsala-Spanish Madrigals

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, I first learned of this music through EU . ., 28 Mar. 2014

Spanish music that was discovered in archives in Uppsala, a treat for anyone interested in medieval music. Not the EU version, though.

Fall of Shanghai: Communist Takeover in 1949
Fall of Shanghai: Communist Takeover in 1949
by Noel Barber
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Flawed, but interesting history, 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As others have pointed out, there are some silly factual errors contained in this book when dealing with the over-arching history of the time, but where it excels in is recounting the experiences of the expats living in Shanghai during the communist takeover in their own words. A definite anti-dote to the talk of the period following the end of the civil war being a 'glorious era' for China before the horrors of the Cultural Revolution.

Bifunctional Amidines in Coordination Chemistry
Bifunctional Amidines in Coordination Chemistry

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Amidines? Then you're going to LOVE Bifunctional Amidines!, 28 Mar. 2014
Seriously, they're like Amidines square, with twice the functionality. The Amidines are BI-WINNING as far as I am concerned. And throwing in the co-ordination chemistry for free? That's just the icing on the cake.

In short, this paper is a must-read for anyone who has ever laid awake wondering "Is this it? Is this all there is? Or could I, should I, be doing more with my oxoacid derivatives?".

The Afrika Reich
The Afrika Reich

Edition: Hardcover
Price: £12.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fiction, 13 Dec. 2013

This review is from: The Afrika Reich (Hardcover)
A decent book with occasional cartoonish diversions. Some things the book describes don't make a great deal of sense, but this is no great failing.

Man with the Iron Heart
Man with the Iron Heart
by Harry Turtledove
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent effort, 13 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book succeeds as a story of the time, although the ending owes much to the time of the writing of the book.
