And the last book didn't let us down. Continued excellent plotting, the addition of 1017's voice added a fresh perspective on events and I continued to care more and more about the characters. Loved having the obvious ending ripped away from me. Deeply thought provoking, especially the way people became players in a game they didn't want to join. Patrick Ness, you are a GENIUS!
Having thoroughly enjoyed Gone, I was a little worried that the series would start to go downhill. Not the case. Enough new stuff to keep you guessing, enough old stuff to give you a feeling of being in a real and familiar place where you understand the rules. Particularly good was how much was revealed about the role of Little Pete - enough to make you go 'ahaaaaa' and 'don't leave it there!!!' at the same time.
Yes, it's simple, but it's fun and every episode makes me laugh. Bring on the Colin-Bradley double act... All 13 episodes in one place, some comedy audio commentaries and a number of laugh-out-loud moments on the video diaries. Good effort with the packaging - makes it a special gift for a mini. Thoroughly recommended.
The Knife of Never Letting Go started it well - two people with a lot of unexplained issues in their lives, a frantic chase and a great cliffhanger at the end. It took a while for me to pick up The Ask and the Answer as I dislike sequels which don't quite live up to the promise of the first book. No disappointments here though - I ended up caring even more about the characters, found Mayor Prentiss a scarily believeable villain, and found the themes of genocide, betrayal and responsibility handled in a thought-provoking manner. A book for those with a strong stomach in places, but I HAVE TO KNOW how this is all going to end. Roll on book 3!
