5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best opera in german that I have watched, 6 July 2011

This review is from: Lohengrin - PAL [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
This performance of "Lohengrin" (1850) by RICHARD WAGNER (1813-1883) is absolutely outstanding for many reasons: The first one, in my opinion, the performance of the great tenor PLACIDO DOMINGO, who sings the wagnerian heroe in a sublime way. His first appear in the first act is majestic and, for me, the best performance of an heroe tha I have watched in an opera in DVD. His aria "In fernem Land" in the third act has a sublime beauty and moved easily my heart. PLACIDO DOMINGO is, without doubt, the best tenor in our time. CHERYL STUDER as Elsa has a very sweet voice and is a wonderful actress, too. Another good reason to buy this DVD.

The "Sonnenaufgang", at the begin of the third act is the best music in the militar way that I have heard. It sounds marvelous and you feel your body to shake because of the emotion. ROBERT LLOYD as the King Henry of Germany is a great bass and has a good appeareance for that.

I recommend this DVD. The best of WAGNER and PLACIDO DOMINGO that I have heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don Carlo: A sea of feelings. An outstanding production, 8 Nov. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This production of "Don Carlo" (1867) by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)is superb. I think that James Levine is a great conductor.
Plácido Domingo as Don Carlo is great. He represents the lack of hopeness by a charming way in his aria "O ben perduto" in the first act. His duet with Elisabetta di Valois (Mirella Freni) in the third act and when they say "Addio, per sempre addio" is the most dramatic part of this great opera.
Mirella Freni as the Princess Elisabetta di Valois has a wonderful voice, but perhaps Katia Ricciarelli had done a better role in this case. However the dramatisme of Freni is difficult to overcome.
Nikolai Ghiaurov as the King Filippo II di Spagna is superb. His arias "Restati" and "Ella giammai mi amó" are superb, worthy of a King`s character.
Ferruccio Furlanetto as the Gran Inquisitore develops a great character like a blind monk. Giuseppe Verdi wanted that this character were blind: perhaps to represent the blind position of the Catholic Church against the freedom in that time? It`s possible.
I recommend to acquire this production, but to buy the french version, too with Domingo, Ricciarelli, Nucci, Ghiaurov and others, being the conductor Claudio Abbado, wich has the anothers parts composed in 1886.
A great production, powerful to your eyes and ears!

5.0 out of 5 stars «An overwhelming music for heroic minds», 13 July 2010
This review is from: Handel: Saul (Audio CD)
The Oratorio «Saul», HWV.53 by Georg Friedrich Händel is made up of an aureole of heroic divinity. Composed in 1739, Saul is a mighty expression of the baroque sacred music. I recommend to hear the symphony of de First Act, that has an «organo obligato» that seems an organo concert. The chorus «How excelent thy name, O Lord» reminds to us a little the Antonio Vivaldi`s style, for example the begin of the opera «Il Giustino» (1724) by this composer. The chorus «The youth inspired by thee, O Lord» is a peaceful but-at the same time- a powerful chorus of the oratorio. It reminds to us the oratorio «Theodora» (1750) by Händel.

The german countertenor Andreas Scholl (as David) sounds wonderful and humble in the aria «O King, your favours with delight I take». The carillon of the second symphony of the oratorio reminds to us a little the french style, for example of the masterworks by Jean Baptiste Lully (1632-1687. The chorus «Welcome, welcome, mighty King» is soft-spoken but very majestic at the same time.

The rogue character of Saul (Neal Davies) is very convincing. In the aria «A serpent in my bosom» there is an overwhelming aureole of rancour.

A wonderful piece of the oratorio and perhaps the most contemplative of this masterwork is the aria of David «O Lord, whose mercies numberless».

My favorite aria of this oratorio is «Such haughty beaties rather move», by Scholl (as David) and a amusing piece for an oratorio.

The speedy aria of David «Your words, O Lord» is one of the best interpretations that I have heard from Andreas Scholl.

The chorus of the Third Act «Eagles are not as swift as they» gives a bittersweet final, like all this oratorio in general.

I recommend this CD SET.
