5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality item, 3 Oct. 2013

I tried one of the lower priced USB phono adapters when the headphone jack on our laptop stopped working. That was flimsy and broke after a couple of days. This one seems well made and been used for 6 months without problems. Sound quality is quite adequate.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is not a new battery, 2 Oct. 2013

Two stars because cheap and it worked when it arrived. However unlike my original Nokia battery which lasted 5 years, this one started to fail after a few months. I'd pay more for a real new battery, but since all these batteries are described as new it's impossible to separate fact from fiction.

1.0 out of 5 stars I don't believe this is a new battery, 25 May 2013

The first battery I received wouldn't charge at at all. It was replaced, and the second one does charge but is failing after less than 12 months. The original battery in my 1600 lasted more than 5 years.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brief return of the Thin White Duke, 1 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Heathen (Audio CD)
As with Reality, I came late to this album, influenced by the fuss over The Next Day. There's a lot to enjoy here from a fairly straightforward pop/rock album. The production is rich and Bowie's voice and delivery are marvellous, encompassing styles from silky-smooth soul to wailing hard rock. One highlight for me after a few listens is the hypnotic opener Sunday, that builds to a crashing climax, only to fade out all too soon. Heathen (The Rays) is in a similar style and likewise leaves me wanting more than its four minutes deliver. But the track I really can't get enough of is the swooning, undulating soul of I Would Be Your Slave. It's like the Thin White Duke never went away, he just cleaned up some of his bad habits. The song is Station To Station (the album) redux, even down to the steamy chug of the percussion - though it's swapped the Trans-Europe Express for what sounds like someone frothing milk for a cappuccino. Two tracks, Everyone Says Hi and A Better Future, sound a bit throwaway, as does the cover of Gemini Spaceship, though this soul-funk outing is impossible to dislike. The rest rocks and flows along nicely. It's too varied overall to be more than a collection of songs, whatever the pretensions of the packaging (and the most inscrutable lyric sheet ever), but it's good even ten years late to hear Bowie so relaxed and on top of his art.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great discovery (ten years late), 25 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Reality (Audio CD)
This is not the David Bowie of the Serious Artistic Statement (Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, Heroes and latterly The Next Day), it's Bowie making some great songs, presumably with a view to touring them. Think Aladdin Sane or perhaps Lodger, both of which are full of original treatments of fairly standard song formats and catchy tunes. The rocking pop songs (New Killer Star, Fall Dog, Reality) are all fine, but for me the highlights are the utterly barmy take on The Modern Lovers' Pablo Picasso (a song whose premise is barmy enough as it is) and the grand finale of Bring Me The Disco King, which starts off like late era Steely Dan, but soon heads somewhere rather more strange and twisted.

I pretty much gave up on Bowie after Tin Machine and Earthling, so this album and its predecessor passed me by ten years ago. I'm pleased that the hoo-ha over The Next Day has led me back to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds fantastic, 28 Feb. 2013
Reviewers have commented on the sound quality of this CD and I have to agree, it's hard to believe you're listening to recordings from the late 60s to early 70s, such is the clarity and immediacy of the production. The guitar riff of Monterey just leaps out of the speakers, while Song to the Siren resonates with tremendous depth, and the bluesy arrangements of Strange Feelin', Chase the Blues Away and Blue Melody really shine. But the thing that links together the wide variety of musical styles in this collection is of course Tim Buckley's incredible voice, presented here with such fidelity that you can't help but share the agony of the pleading that ends I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain, or the ecstasy of Make It Right, or the tenderness of Once I Was and Dream Letter. And that's before you come to the pyrotechnics of Lorca and the Starsailor tracks... I fear it'll be a long time before I hear another collection of songs that I rate as highly as these.

The track ordering works well musically, but is rather random chronologically, so it can be difficult to follow the arc of Buckley's career, though you can always resequence the tracks through a playlist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed, 11 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I invested in a Bose portable SoundDock and then lost my iPod, so I needed something that would let me stream from an iPad instead. This little device does exactly that. It's easy to set up and the sound quality over bluetooth is fine. And it allows other members of the household to stream from their non-Apple phones. Many iPod docks have bluetooth these days, but for ones that don't this is a good solution.

Chambers Book of Azed Crosswords
Chambers Book of Azed Crosswords

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight for lovers of the tough cryptic, 13 Jan. 2006
For many solvers Azed's work represents the pinnacle of achievement in the art of the cryptic crossword. Over thirty-plus years his weekly Observer puzzles have achieved an amazing level of consistency, being tough to solve while scrupulously fair to the solver, highly original but never impenetrable, and above all, erudite, witty and fun. The vocabulary explores the furthest reaches of the Chambers dictionary and beyond. There are references in clues to the arts, popular culture, politics, history and sport, especially the language of cricket. Probably the only weakness in his polymathy is science (oh no, another protein!). And those penny-dropping moments, when the wordplay and definition reveal themselves in a completely unexpected way, abound.
The book will principally appeal to crossword fans who have already tried Azed's puzzles and are hungry for more (or just want to revisit their favourites), but it's to be hoped that they will also use it to introduce others to the delights of this setter. Azed pays tribute to his loyal regular solvers by including many puzzles in which one clue is a prize-winner from his monthly clue-writing competitions (with acknowledgements alongside the solution).
It would be hard to choose the hundred best puzzles of the period this collection covers, but none of these will disappoint, and many are absolute gems.
