4.0 out of 5 stars Good value case, 24 Jan 2014

Fits the phone well, offers decent protection, and looks smart. It's PU fake leather of course, and if you got the Nokia for its slim profile, this case makes it rather chunky. But better than expected for the price.

The Azed Book of Crosswords
The Azed Book of Crosswords
by Jonathan Crowther
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of original puzzles, 8 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This collection from 1977 contains about 50 original puzzles by Azed himself and also by several of the regular competitors in the Ximenes and Azed competitions, including Zander (Alec Robins), Sesrom (CJ and RS Morse), Apex (Eric Chalkley) and Virgilius (Brian Greer). The style of the puzzles is more Listener than Azed: there are no 'plains'. None of the puzzles is published anywhere else, so it makes a fascinating collection. There is a short profile of each of the contributing setters.

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Collection of early Azeds, 8 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although this collection was published in 1989, the puzzles it contains appeared in the Observer between 1972 and 1976, and so represent some of Azed's earliest work. There are 85 plain puzzles and 15 specials including 'Noah's Ark' (no 105) and 'Birthday Party' (no 200). In competition puzzles winning clues replace the original definitions. If you're a late-starting Azed fan, and can find a clean copy, this book is well worth adding to your crossword library.

The Centenary of the Crossword: The Story of the World's Most Popular Puzzle

4.0 out of 5 stars More his story than history, 20 Oct 2013
The best thing about this book is the collection of 50 or so puzzles it contains from different decades and countries. This appears to be where the hard work has gone, and it's worth getting for the puzzles alone. The prose that links them is rather less compelling. The coverage of the crossword's history is brief - its heyday in 1920s America gets barely a couple of paragraphs ("the nation was swept up in crossword fever"), and its social context almost none at all. The development of puzzles outside the UK and US receives welcome mention, but it's not much more than a bullet list. The writer soon gets on to the more comfortable territory of today's setters, editors (10 pages on editors) and solvers, and a short how-to-solve-cryptics guide. John Halpern clearly loves his job and loves crosswords and crossworders, and happily declares it. The enthusiasm's not in question, but this reader would have liked to see it backed up with a bit more historical research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best replacement battery, 16 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was disappointed with my two previous 'new' Nokia batteries from Amazon marketplace as they were actually reconditioned ones and lasted only a few months. This one really is new and is holding its charge well with no sudden run-down. I'm pleased I got it.

I tried one of the lower priced USB phono adapters when the headphone jack on our laptop stopped working. That was flimsy and broke after a couple of days. This one seems well made and been used for 6 months without problems. Sound quality is quite adequate.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is not a new battery, 2 Oct 2013

Two stars because cheap and it worked when it arrived. However unlike my original Nokia battery which lasted 5 years, this one started to fail after a few months. I'd pay more for a real new battery, but since all these batteries are described as new it's impossible to separate fact from fiction.

1.0 out of 5 stars I don't believe this is a new battery, 25 May 2013

The first battery I received wouldn't charge at at all. It was replaced, and the second one does charge but is failing after less than 12 months. The original battery in my 1600 lasted more than 5 years.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brief return of the Thin White Duke, 1 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Heathen (Audio CD)
As with Reality, I came late to this album, influenced by the fuss over The Next Day. There's a lot to enjoy here from a fairly straightforward pop/rock album. The production is rich and Bowie's voice and delivery are marvellous, encompassing styles from silky-smooth soul to wailing hard rock. One highlight for me after a few listens is the hypnotic opener Sunday, that builds to a crashing climax, only to fade out all too soon. Heathen (The Rays) is in a similar style and likewise leaves me wanting more than its four minutes deliver. But the track I really can't get enough of is the swooning, undulating soul of I Would Be Your Slave. It's like the Thin White Duke never went away, he just cleaned up some of his bad habits. The song is Station To Station (the album) redux, even down to the steamy chug of the percussion - though it's swapped the Trans-Europe Express for what sounds like someone frothing milk for a cappuccino. Two tracks, Everyone Says Hi and A Better Future, sound a bit throwaway, as does the cover of Gemini Spaceship, though this soul-funk outing is impossible to dislike. The rest rocks and flows along nicely. It's too varied overall to be more than a collection of songs, whatever the pretensions of the packaging (and the most inscrutable lyric sheet ever), but it's good even ten years late to hear Bowie so relaxed and on top of his art.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great discovery (ten years late), 25 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Reality (Audio CD)
This is not the David Bowie of the Serious Artistic Statement (Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, Heroes and latterly The Next Day), it's Bowie making some great songs, presumably with a view to touring them. Think Aladdin Sane or perhaps Lodger, both of which are full of original treatments of fairly standard song formats and catchy tunes. The rocking pop songs (New Killer Star, Fall Dog, Reality) are all fine, but for me the highlights are the utterly barmy take on The Modern Lovers' Pablo Picasso (a song whose premise is barmy enough as it is) and the grand finale of Bring Me The Disco King, which starts off like late era Steely Dan, but soon heads somewhere rather more strange and twisted.

I pretty much gave up on Bowie after Tin Machine and Earthling, so this album and its predecessor passed me by ten years ago. I'm pleased that the hoo-ha over The Next Day has led me back to it.
