2010...This is a very good book for an engineer like me.

However ... Its value would be quadrupled if accompanied by a simple CD with examples of scales and rythms. .... or at least precise references say .... so many minutes into this / symphony / movement / popsong piece you will notice / hear ...

The book thoroughly explains octaves etc ... showing a need for a total of 2 x 12 notes to give access to all the scales in 12 different keys (if needed !).. BUT I could see no reason for 7 octaves on a pianoforte keyboard (I must be missing something!?) .. How does music score for piano distinguish between the key of A scale say in say the lowest octave from that say in the highest ?.

Would have been nice to know what say a horn player does to produce 24 different notes .. and why there are valve and valveless horns.

But a good intro!
REVIEW ... june 2013 ... On re=reading I now find several shortcomings . for a physicist the author is very woolly /even wrong ..
eg1 .... on tuning a harp ..... no reason is given for allocating the string1 pinged note to string 4 .. why not 3 or 5 ? also .. you cannot ping any string to produce a LOWER note ! eg2 ... insists that the 8th note in an octave is the SAME as note 1 ... IT IS NOT ....It simply is given the same name . eg 3 Pythagoras .. almost certainly did not have the concept of frequencies. eg4 ..."musicians don't use more than ABOUT 7 different notes at a time" ...does he really mean at a time or does he mean simultaneously? ... a pianist has immediate access to 42 or more notes! etc etc ..
these points may seem trivial to a trained musician , but for a thinking novice / newcomer such inconsistencies hinder full understanding.
