4.0 out of 5 stars ... 2 contrasting subsections of the piece are given an excellent performance by the musicians, 11 July 2015

This review is from: Silencio (Audio CD)
Worth buying simply for Part's 'Tabula Rasa' where the 2 contrasting subsections of the piece are given an excellent performance by the musicians. The inclusion of works by Martynov and Glass provide interesting additions to the disc, however for my taste I prefer Glass's original version of his work in string quartet format rather than this orchestral version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of my favourite Glass compositions with the added bonus of his First ..., 12 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some of my favourite Glass compositions with the added bonus of his First quartet that I hadn't come across before. Sound recording on disc an improvement on the much earlier Kronos Quartet recordings, however I prefer the latters interpretation of the 3rd Quartet. Strongly recommended for Glass fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elgar recording, 20 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The musicianship displayed in the Enigma variations is of a high standard. I have only used the record in SACD dual channel replay mode and hence the sound quality of the recording is very high, fully capturing the dynamic ranges of the organ to the violin. One niggle I did find with the SACD recording itself is that it required an extremely high gain level to be set on the replay preamplifier for the recording to be heard at normal playback levels. I don't believe it is a fault in my playback system;anyone else noticed the same?

4.0 out of 5 stars Some modern recordings for Britten's centenary, 17 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A superb music recording from Channel Classics that shows what can be achieved with SACD recordings nowadays. I would recommend purchase simply on these grounds alone.

Turning to the performances of these well known Britten scores I was a bit less happy. The variations are given a workmanlike rendition, but I think Les Illuminations are better rendered for a tenor voice than the soprano. Finally, the tenor and horn serenade was again in my view a little pedestrian. The Scottish Ensemble produced a similar disc not too long ago and although it is itself a good quality SACD recording it's not as good as the Channel Classics disc. The Scottish Ensemble however win in the "performance stakes"; the horn playing by Martin Owen in the serenade is simply magical.

3.0 out of 5 stars Curate's egg, 24 Aug. 2009

At long last it appears that at least some record companies are taking advantage of modern recording techniques such as DSD recording to provide the listener with significant improvements in the quality of the listening experience now available to music lovers. This recording is an example of what can now be technically achieved. Large dynamic range coupled to wide frequency response provide the listener with what has been missing since the advent of CDs; the results are startling.

Turning to the artistic merits of the recording I have some personal reservations. For my own taste I found the interpretaion to be somewhat clinical and lacking in real red-blooded emotion that one expects for this music. It is certainly inferior to the now old version produced by Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra some time ago - what a pity DSD recording wasn't about then.
